How to use VRAY DR with RPManager submission?

Hi All,

I want to submit jobs to use VRAY DR from RPManager within 3dsmax. I don’t know if this is possible.

I want it to work like Backburner - we would send the job to just one favourite slave, with the other slaves running the VRAY DR spawner, and all the farm would be used. As far as Backburner was concerned it was just one slave rendering, but the whole farm was busy. This method does not work since we replaced Backburner with Deadline. (job renders on just the favourite slave, without using DR)

So my question is how do we do this - is there a setting that I can adjust so that Deadline will not disable VRAY DR? (We bought Deadline licences for all our slaves if this is the issue)

I have tried Submitting VRAY DR jobs via the deadline submission script, reserving slaves etc, but this seems not possible from RPManager unless I am mistaken. And once you have to manually submit dozens of render passes it gets old…

The only way I can think of to make that work is to dedicate the one slave to just RPM stuff and configure it to control the others, but not sure how to make that work.

Hi,
Not sure what version of Deadline your using, but if we skip RPManager for a second (is it actually needed here?), this can be done via our off-load V-Ray or MR DBR system within SMTD. It was introduced late in v6.2, so is available to you if your running v6.2.1.50 or later?

D6 docs:
docs.thinkboxsoftware.com/produc … f-load-dbr

D7 docs:
docs.thinkboxsoftware.com/produc … f-load-dbr

It might be an idea to also ask Grant @ RPManager if it’s possible to support this “Off-load V-Ray/MR DBR” checkbox in SMTD via RPM. I will ask a colleague as well if this in-directly is actually already supported.

Sadly RPManager is the goal… I need a ton a render passes.

I can have RPManager and backburner and DR… but Backburner is super unreliable with RPManager.

I can have RPManager and Deadline 7, but no DR… and DR is needed for 8K single frames.

I can have Deadline and DR, without RPManager if I use your SMTD, but no render passes.

So the goal is to work out how/why Deadline disables VRAY DR when sent to one “master” slave, whereas Backburner is stupid and will render a DR scene fine. I hope that makes sense.

Hi,
Deadline off-load DBR via SMTD or RPM requires a workstation mode/license on the master. Do you have this enabled?
It’s documented here, together with a possible work-around:
docs.thinkboxsoftware.com/produc … f-load-dbr

Thanks for that link, I have progressed a little further.

I have got a max licence working on one of the slaves, and can now submit a DBR job that will work… if by chance the first frame Task 0 lands on that slave. I cannot see a method for ensuring that Task 0 goes only to a specific slave, so we are stuck again.

RPManager does not seem to have a submission script for 3ds Command, which I presume would take care of this limitation. While some Googling shows a 3dsmax cmd submission option added in RPManager, I sure can’t find it.

Dammit, so close I can taste it.

Success! And the way I wanted it to work.

Rendering to one slave with max licence via RPManager/Deadline.
Manually edited vray_dr.cfg on this slave. (it seems to ignore Save servers in scene file setting)
Running VRAY spawner on other slaves. (no deadline involved)
Force Workstation mode, Enable silent mode on.

This means no need for buggy command line 3dsmax mode. No need for Deadline fiddles to get task 0 assigned to one slave. No reliability hassles with Deadline controlling DRspawners. (waiting for all slaves to be ready, can’t add slaves during render, must set offload numbers of slaves to exactly available)

Thanks heaps Mike for that support document, it got me looking at vray_dr.cfg which was the issue.

Now to see if there are any gotchas in practice with running on workstation mode… it certainly needs silent mode or plugins bitch about licences.

Just for future reference:
