I am experiencing a Slave crash every other hour and finally managed to capture some crash output (since it doesn’t print anything to the logfiles).
I am running Deadline Version: 5.0.0.44528, FranticX Version: 2.0.0.44525, OS X 10.6.8 and Mono 2.10.2
Any ideas?
After the slave runs for about 1/2 an hour, can you open a terminal and run the following:
ps auxwwWe’ve seen cases where a bunch of defunct processes use up all the system handles, which can result in the error you’re seeing. If this is the case for you, running the ‘ps’ command should confirm this.
Is this happening on all of your OSX machines, or just one in particular?

I have Deadline running on two machines that have basically the same setup. Both of which are showing the crash. But it is very unpredictable. Sometimes the slave runs several hours, then they crash and keep crashing like every 7 or 8 minutes. Other times they don’t make it 30 minutes. The crashdump into the terminal is always very similar though.
I have attached the output of ps auxww. The slave had been running for approx. 1.5h, but immediately crashed after I issued the ps.

Thanks! There seems to be a few ps’s and top’s running, which I expected. I also noticed multiple Nuke processes. Are you currently rendering with concurrent tasks? If so, how many? Maybe try reducing the count just to see if that makes a difference (ie: start with 1 or 2 at a time).
I am rendering with 4 concurrent Nukes, yes. I started with 8 (one per core), but that seemed rather unstable, so I dropped it to 4. But the other machine that is also showing the same behaviour (although a bit less regular) is running only one task at a time.
OK, good to know. One thing you could try is to increase the open handle count on the machines:

That has been known to help in some cases. We are also exploring ways to reduce the number of external processes that Deadline launches, which should eliminate the problem.

Both slaves crashed again after I set the file limit to 10000 files.

I’ve also issued another ps. However this was after about 10-20 after the slave crashed and the 3 Nuke instances had already finished rendering. Other then that the system should have been pretty much the same.

Thanks for giving it a try. This is something we’ll have to try and resolve during the 5.1 beta. Since you are able to reproduce the problem reliably, it would be great if you could join the beta and help us out:
