Probably a dumb question: but can you confirm that Karkatoa 1.6 will not install/run under Max 2013?
thanks /b

Of course we can confirm that.
It was last built in 2011 to allow existing users to switch to the new “thinkbox” license vendor name from the old “frantic”.
Max 2013 came out in Spring 2012. Krakatoa 2.0 came out for Christmas 2011, just before 2013 was released, and naturally took over.
1.6 is not supported anymore and was never recompiled for 2013/2014 to force users to get the latest version, and to avoid major sadness in our Krakatoa senior developer…
It was worth an ask as I have several render engines that certainly support back a version or 3 of Max.
I understand your motivation of course, but as a small studio that has - thus far - been able to actually use KT zero times on an actual production job it’s difficult for me to justify the upgrade cost, particularly as I was just using an older scene that employs a particle flow operator from KT. I’m sure you can understand my side of that dilemma and my major sadness as well
Anyway, thanks for confirming.

If you are not rendering with it, you can simply install the latest Krakatoa MX 2 build in Evaluation mode (without a license) in your Max 2013 and 2014. This way, all Magmas and old style KCMs and PRT objects and everything else will work. You can still render, too, just with a watermark.
If a project comes along that requires rendering, you can consider updating your subscription.
I generally wouldn’t like doing that as it feels like I’m being exploitive, but in this case I may need to. Thanks Bobo.
btw: it’s certainly nothing against KT that I haven’t used it. It’s partly just the kind of work I do, and partly the kind of resolution requirements that I am up against. We did just do a project with Anselm that made good use of KT - but he rendered that stuff for me
