3dsmax Hair Farm Support

Hi,
We just got a new plugin called Hair Farm over here and we only have a certain number of render licenses. When more machines render than we have licenses, the frames still render (without hair) and don’t throw any errors. Shouldn’t the frame fail if it can’t get a license. Is it the plugin developers responsibility or deadlines to fail the frame if a license cannot be found?

Fred

That’s normally the plugin developer’s responsibility. They might decide to render, but watermark, or whatever. Up to them. How they have their plugin notify Deadline? I don’t know, but for the time being, have you set up limit groups?

I’ve set up a pool of only 17 machines (#of licenses) and that will do for now. I’ll ask the plugin developer if he can throw some error on # of licensed used.

As Chad said, you should really be using “limit groups” and not “pools” to control this kind of issue…! Its what it was designed for!

Fred, I would suggest you complain to Cem - we had exactly the same issue the other day, some slaves were just not set up correctly with licenses and Hair Farm was throwing no errors, just rendering no hair. Since we did not know the cause of the problem, the affected artists passed the problem to RnD instead if IT. This wasted nearly a day of somebody’s precious time (not mine, but still a waste) to figure out some slaves rendered because they were licensed well and some failed because they weren’t and not for a technical reason (since there was a Prime Focus plugin involved in the mix, it wasn’t exactly clear).
So the more users complain to the developer, the more likely HF will be fixed to complain when there is a problem.

And as others have said, check out Limit Groups as the method for limiting the number of machines based on available licenses.

I don’t know anything about limit groups. Can someone point me to some info?
