Hello
I would like to use a feature that is available in 3dsmax when the timeline is set to frames:ticks, which is to submit subframes to render as separate images: eg. time 20:00 to 20:30 = 30 images instead of just one. This is available with the videopost feature of max, by specifying a time range and a number of image to generate, unrelated. With the normal render, sending this would give just one frame instead of 30.
Now, is it possible to use deadline to manage such rendering requirements.
btw, this is for “matrix bullet” style renders where the camera jump-moves between 2 frames (using subframes/ticks) while the rest of the animation is time-suspended.
anyway, I’ve got a full job based on that feature so I would greatly appreciate to be able to use deadline for it instead of the clunky videopost…

After looking through our 3dsmax plugin, my gut reaction is that this is not supported at the moment. However, it may be easy to add this option to the 3dscmd plugin (which uses the command line version of max or viz to do the render). I’m not all that familiar with the video post feature, so if possible, could you setup a simple test scene that we could use for testing? Preferably a small file with no external maps or references if possible.
Thanks!
Thanks Ryan
Here is a simple file: cefaidesign.ch/share/slowmotion_test.max
just go to video post, check the file output folder and render.
Basically, the vp says:
from frame 0 to 20 render one image per frame
from frame 20 to 21 render 30 images (using subframes intervals)
from frame 21 to 30 render one frame per image
the resulting file sequence, when played in a normal timeline results in camera moving normally but the teapot being in slow motion during a few frames.
hope this is clear enough. a script for deadline would have to give the user the ability to specify a timeline sequence and a file sequence intervals.
tks for the help, let me know what you think

Thanks for the scene. I’m not sure if this is normal, but whenever I try to render using VideoPost, I just get a blank VFB and nothing else happens. Also, when I render from the command line using 3dsmaxcmd.exe and setting the videopostJob setting to on, max returns an error.
We’ve added an option to the 3dsCommand submission dialog to apply VideoPost to the scene (which will be included in Deadline 3.0), and the option gets passed to 3dsmaxcmd.exe. However, because Max keeps reporting an error, I’m not sure if we’re missing something or if there were some dependencies that the scene requires that we don’t have access to.
If you have any ideas, let us know!
Cheers,
We figured out the problem. We didn’t realize that Video Post had its own output settings, so it was trying to save the files to a location that didn’t exist. After correcting this problem, we found that it rendered with the 3dsCommand plugin in Deadline 3.0 just fine (we just had to make sure to specify the frame range properly).
Cheers,
Hi Ryan,
Could you please send me a private message to olivier(at)cefaidesign.ch with instructions on how to do that? I desperately need this for one of my productions job that has started already!
I am on the deadline version just prior to beta3; let me know if you believe I can upgrade to beta3 with no risk at this point.
Tks
Olivier
I’ve emailed some information to you. At this point, we believe that beta 3 is stable enough for production, and we’ve been using it here in production for almost a month.
Cheers,
