I think the problem is that max is crashing or hanging, and when Deadline tries to clean things up, it throws this error. Unfortunately, I think this error is preventing us from displaying more information about why max exited in the first place. Are you running Deadline 3.0 SP1? We made some changes to how processes are handled in this version, and from the log, it looks like you’re running the original Deadline 3.0 release. You can download the latest version of Deadline from here:

SP1 doesn’t require a new license if you’re already running 3.0, so we recommend upgrading if you can. While this might not prevent max from exiting in this case, Deadline should at least handle it better, and we can go from there.

This might be a dumb question, but has the repository been upgraded to 3.0 SP1 as well? The reason I ask is that the line “Terminating 3dsmax child processes” near the bottom of the log is commented out (ie: skipped over) in the latest version of the 3dsmax.py plugin file. That’s what lead me to believe that you were running the original 3.0 release in the first place. If you right-click on the deadlineslave.exe in \your\repository\bin\Windows and select Properties, you should be able to view the file version information.

think i’ve cracked it.
was trying to get the salves to run with user rights rather than admin rights. Switched it back to admin and they’re all working. do you know of any work arounds to have slaves run 3ds max 2009 with only user privalages?
Nothing specific comes to mind. Anyways, glad to hear you have it working. If you do figure out a way around your problem, let us know - it would be good information for a FAQ.
