Banding issues in particles

Hey,
Having done a search it seems that i am not the only one that is having banding issues in the particles. Basically what is happening, is am getting dark lines through out the particle mass (using PRT Volume). I can get it to go away, if i change the density of the particles… or the number of particles being used… Playing with the Shadow map size also “changes” the banding. Any real ideas what is causing this? seems alittle odd… and it is making it almost impossible to make solid objects with a huge amounts of particles, ie a Pillar made of sand…
If any one has any suggestions i am all ears
thanks
c

I would suggest starting with this related topic from the documentation:
thinkboxsoftware.com/krak-particle-density/

Also, a trick some users have come up with is creating multiple lights at the same location with a fraction of the multiplier and rotating them to produce multiple shadow maps (eventually with varying shadow map sizes) to combine into a smoother result (at a cost of render time, obviously)

There are some things that could be done on our side to reduce/remove the moire patterns and we have those on our Wishlist/Roadmap.

But I wouldn’t say it is impossible to get a solid object look from particles and we have a lot of examples throughout the docs to prove that.

Bobo,
hey, thanks for the reply, and i guess i should qualify. Your correct, there are a lot of great examples, and of course the lets not forget the amazings ones as well that are out there of solids built on particles. And i am glad that you are looking into this, and have it on your roadmap/wishlist! I have played with the lights, adding multiples, vayring multipliers, changing Smap sizes…etc. it all works to varying degrees, and in combination will produce some ‘Smooth’ images.
Was just woundering if someone had found a “magic bullet”, aside from the tweeks. Or perhaps if a ‘Fix’ was up coming in a pending release.
Thanks again! craig
