crashing on farm with turbosmooth isoline display and rendertime on

I have been having render errors over our deadline farm running vray 1.5 sp1 and max 9 32bit. 30+ render boxes were all failing frames and coming up with render errors (renderlight.cpp) MEMORY ALLOCATION ERROR - the 64 bit machines were all rendering the file fine… spent a few hours testing and tried turning off isoline display and render iterations - just making the turbosmooth iterations high enough to get nice smoothing - the 32 bit machines picked it up and rendered with no problems!

so what does isoline and rendertime turbosmooth do with the max file at render time? because it is maxing out my ram and causing errors?!? maybe this is something we could script so any files we send automatically through deadline get the correct turbosmooth iteration settings etc…?

Hi Richard,

My gut reaction is that isoline and rendertime turbosmooth isn’t doing

anything with the max file at render time, it’s just that your current

settings are causing the render to use up more memory than the 32bit

machines have available. A 32bit machine allows a single application to

use only 2GB of RAM (or 3GB with the special switch), while a 64 bit

machine allows 32bit apps to use up to 4GB and 64bit apps basically have

no memory limits.

Have you tried rendering this scene locally on a 32bit workstation to

see if you run into the same problem? Also, could you not initially trim

back on your settings so that it renders on the 32bit and 64bit machines

from the beginning? Since it sounds like you’re getting nice enough

smoothing anyways, this sounds like it could be a viable solution.

Cheers,
