Deadline reading CPU speed wrong

I’m not sure if this is a Deadline issue on an issue with my processor. But one of my slaves seems to be showing only half of it’s 3.3gHZ speed. I used CPUID to check my processor speed and it’s correctly showing the proper speed. So can someone shed some light on how Deadline acquires the speed statistics? I’d like to figure out if I’ve got a bad machine on my farm.

intel has speedstepping for power consumption. i think there have been threads about this before on the forum - but usually it’s power-related and not generally a problem. Meaning the numbers we get are what is reported to us at a point when the CPUS are perhaps idle. Are the frame render times consistent with other machines?

It’s kind of hard to tell. Our farm is a hodgepodge of machines. One of the machines is an Intel i7 980 which is supposed to clock in at 3.3GHz. I’ve got 6 of them on the farm and 5 of them are showing 3.3 but one is showing 1.6. I think I’ll go ahead and run a job on just those machines to see if there is a performance drop. But at the moment I’m wondering why Deadline is showing the wrong speed because the machine itself isn’t showing any issues that I can find.

windows? maybe try and disable speed stepping/slowdown for power as a test

Yes, we’re using Windows 7. And how would I go about disabling the speed stepping/slowdown?

i would start here -

howtogeek.com/howto/9090/lea … -settings/

i think you can also go to the cpu directly in device manager, but i’m no longer on w7 here [8 and 8.1]

Cool, I’ll check it out thanks.
