I didn’t know that we still shipped this!
Which OS are you guys running it on? I’ll have a look at it…
Cheers,
We are running win7 x64.
Are there better methods for starting the slave during the day when the machine is idle?
We have a script which stops the slave (as a service) when artists log in (it would not stop if s.o. from production logs in for example)…
I want the workstation machines to help rendering during, say lunchtimes, so i figured the screensaver is the way to go…any other suggestions?
Cheers,
Timor
So I did a bit of digging and talked to Edwin, it turns out we’re not shipping the Deadline Screensaver anymore, starting with 6. We were under the impression that it did not work at all on Windows Vista and up, due to screensavers running in some kind of protected sandbox (UAC-related stuff I’d guess). Was it actually working properly for you guys on Win7? We might have to revisit this if it actually works.
One thing that works for some people is the Windows Task Scheduler:
msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library … 02(v=vs.85.aspx
It allows you to specify tasks to run on specific triggers, including an Idle trigger.
Hi Jon,
thanks for the feedback.
I guess we will work around the issue with setting the auto logoff in windows to a very short intervall, so the slave starts as a service again as soon as the logout has happened (thats pretty close to a screensaver).
Cheers,
Timor
This was definitely working for us in Windows7 through version 5.2. Our default users are admins of the machine though so I imagine that is why the UAC stuff wasn’t an issue.

Sounds like we need to look into whether it should be removed completely, or just put lots of restrictions on it so it runs right.
