Our artists are submitting more and more fume jobs these days, lately we’ve been getting max files with multiple fume grids pointing to the same fume cache, this tends to generate a lot of traffic on the server and apparently also the DLREP server. The problem is that when these jobs pick up, the DLRep server just gets killed with traffic (200MBps, it is 10gbe connected). I was under the assumption that files needed by nodes would be pulled directly from the file server and not (especially in the case of these large jobs) have to pull through the DLREP server. This doesn’t seem to be the case, I can account for this and just beef up the Deadline server but obviously I would like to not do that since we have an expensive file server already and would rather continue putting money into it and not a new Deadline server.
Is this a known thing when dealing with multiple fume grids? I know for sure it is a bandwidth problem, when we lower the number of machines the job renders on the lag and server traffic all but disappear and that is a completely acceptable workaround so I guess my only question is: Why can’t these be pointed to the file server? Why does the traffic have to route through the DLManager?
