IPMI Support

Are there any plans for deadline to support IPMI for power management? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_Platform_Management_Interface)? As non of our render blades support wake-on-lan.

There currently aren’t immediate plans to support IPMI, but we are looking at making Power Management improvements for Deadline 4.1, so this is something we can investigate. We’ll check with our IT staff to see if we even have the hardware to test this out.

Cheers,

DELL Render blades by any chance?
This sounds very similar to the wall I hit with WOL / SNMP on DELL Poweredge 1955 blades & chassis systems :frowning:

Yup, poweredge 1955. Did you find a solution?

Not yet, but I have a call with DELL shortly so hopefully this will get resolved. The last month has been crazy here so hopefully these kind of issues will be dealt with shortly.
I’ll post again when I have something interesting to report on…

Here are the results of communication with DELL on the subject of WOL & SNMP support on the DELL PowerEdge x9xx and x8xx series blade servers:

delltechcenter.com/thread/37 … a+Jan+2008

The 1955 series blades do support IPMI v2.0 so just need Deadline to support this to work for those with DELL based blade hardware.

Ryan,
Please can we seriously consider IPMI support in a future release of Deadline?

Thanks,
Mike

We will be considering this for 4.1, but unfortunately at the moment we don’t have the hardware to test this on. What we might end up doing is creating a little test app and post it for testing (maybe here or on the beta board). Once we have confirmation that our code works, then we can incorporate that into Deadline.

Nice one! ill certainly test it out.

Cheers Ryan

Hey guys,

We were looking at the best way to support IPMI and we came across ipmiutil (ipmiutil.sourceforge.net/). Could you give ipmiutil a try and see if it works? Looks like the “ipmiutil reset” command is what we’re looking for here. We can’t actually test it here as we don’t have any machines that support IPMI.

If ipmiutil works, we could implement a feature for Deadline that could run a specified command (in this case an ipmiutil command) instead of sending a WOL message. Does this sound like it would be a good solution for supporting IPMI?

BUMP

Have either of you guys gotten a chance to test this out?

Hey Cody,
One of my team has been looking into this and I know he hit a couple of issues which I think were specifically related to DELL kit with IPMI. I’ll get an update off him tomorrow and post the results!
Thanks,
Mike

Sounds good! Thanks Mike!

Hey Cody,
Jon O’D updated me with the following info for you:

While out-of-band IPMI looks like a safer better route to take (can access IPMI even when network is down) - it is not feasible in our situation, since this requires a dedicated Ethernet port - however it can be run on a shared port (in-band).

We are currently working with our IT department to get IPMI over lan set up on our servers

The following tools could probably be used

But until we have IPMI over lan set up we cannot be sure.

Just spoken to IT and someone is on it today, so maybe next week…?

Regards,
Mike

This is currently with our IT guys, will be next week when i hear back.

Keep you all posted

Cheers

Hi guys, we have a bunch of the 1955 Blades and are having the same issues with power management. We have looked at the open source ipmi solutions and can probably work through the issue but I thought I would ask if you had any luck?

I would be happy to get our sysadmin to work with your tech guys on a solution if there is anything we can do to help?

Regards,
Brad

I’m still waiting for one of my systems guys to have the time to sort this issue out for us. I’ll give him another nudge today, as I know this has dropped priority quite a bit recently due to production demands. You may wish to check out Deadline v4.1 beta as IPMI support has been added by the development team.

Mike

Thanks Mike,

I’ll look at 4.1 but we need to finish our current project before looking at an upgrade.

let me know how you go at your end, I’ll try and get my tech guys to nut out a solution from our end.

Cheers,
Brad

FYI.
Just to let everyone know, we are now back on the case of configuring IPMI on our blades (production levels have been too high in recent weeks/months to be playing with anything :frowning:) and hopefully should have some results shortly. We are using these tools to test:
ipmiutil.sourceforge.net/
Mike

Thanks for the head’s up Mike, keep us posted!
