Krakatoa / FumeFX / Deadline issues

Hello there,

It’s Day 4 of our new Krakatoa and FumeFX setup and slowly it’s coming together, although we’re still plagued by lots of errors. As mentioned in another post we had issues getting FumeFX2.1 and Krakatoa working, as 2.1 isn’t supported yet. We rolled back to 2.0a and now some of our renders are throwing strange errors.

We have one scene based on a FumeFX sim were the first frame won’t render (locally or on the farm) as Krakatoa is reporting that the very first FXD file doesn’t have “did not have the requisite seeding channels (ie. Smoke and/or Fuel)”. Out of interest do people generally sim FumeFX from a minus frame range to get a bit of a run up and ensure all the channels are ok ?.

Second issue is a crash on the farm but not locally with another file. I’m getting a number of different errors on different machines :

These errors all seem very different. Other artists are able to render Krakatoa and / or FumeFX on these machines.

Thanks to everyone that’s helped with all these teething troubles so far, these forums are invaluable.

Hi Ben,

I haven’t seen any problems like this myself. Would you be able to describe the process further? What is in the scene? Are you submitting a Krakatoa render job that does this?

Even better, I’d love to have a scene so I can try and reproduce the error.

A few juicy bits of of the log files you provided are:

Are you sure these aren’t real problems?

I know you said you can render these scenes locally. I assume that is on an artist’s workstation. Have you tried manually starting max and rendering these scenes on these slaves?

Cheers,
Darcy

Hi Darcy,

The FumeFX issue is an odd one. We have plenty of licenses, and even if we didn’t Fume shouldn’t be requesting a license when rendering.

I’ll try opening the scene locally on a machine and then I’ll send you a copy to see if you get the same issues.

cheers
ben

Ok, remoting into the machine and setting a render off using the interface works fine. So it’s got to be something about network rendering, How do I go about uploading a file for you to test ?.

cheers
ben

When making a response, there is a tab just below the Submit button where you can upload an attachment. I’m not sure what the size limit is. If it refuses the attachment, you could email it directly to me at darcy.harrison AT primefocusworld.com. If its still to crazy big, let me know and I can set up an FTP server for you.

Excellent … emailing now !

Have you installed DCPFLICS on the render nodes as well as ‘installing’ the FumeFX plugins?
Although not required for net rendering, I believe the DCPFLICS is required to be installed, as you might be trying to carry out a sim job and hence it will try to authenticate.
See my Deadline post for further details on firewall exceptions that need to be made if you run the a firewall on your LAN, which would also potentially block traffic.

Hi Mike,

I’m pretty sure we have, but I’ll check that tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your help … much appreciated.

Ben,

In the file you sent me I don’t see any FumeFx objects … Is that on purpose?

The only particles in this scene is a PFlow object with a few forces applied. Is this scene indicative of what is throwing those error messages on Deadline?

Can you please provide instructions on how you would submit this scene to Deadline.

Hi Darcy,

Yep this is a very simple file with particles moving through space. When it’s submitted to the farm it continually throws the exceptions I’ve listed above.

The Fume issues are occuring in other files.

I’d submit this to the farm to render using our normal Deadline 4.0 submission menu.

cheers
ben

Hi Ben,

Can you provide the exact version specs of Max? What version, what build, what Service Pack (if any) e.g. “3ds Max 2010 64 bit Service Pack 1” or something like that.
Knowing that info could be useful.

I’m not in work right now, but your guess is right … I’m almost certain we’re on SP1 … so “3ds Max 2010 64 bit Service Pack 1”

Hi there,

If it helps, we now have a second unrelated file that’s reporting the same issues when rendering on the farm. It does render locally though.

At first we wondered if it was due to RAM (some rendernodes are 4GB), but it crashes on every single rendernode … but renders without incident locally.

thanks
ben

Please post the WHOLE error report from a crashed node (attach it to the post).
And since the problems you reported earlier were so varied (some with Krakatoa, some with VRay), please specify each time you post what kind of job it was.
“Crashed” is just not enough info for debugging these issues. The more data your provide, the better.
Also, if you have non-Krakatoa-related crashes, please be sure to post in the Deadline forums or email ‘deadline-support AT primefocusworld DOT com’ so Ryan can be involved in the debugging process.

Hi Bobo,

Apologies for the vagueness of my posts. We’ve managed to fix the Deadline / FumeFX simulation issues, I’ll post up a resolution on that thread now.

Our current issue is Krakatoa crashing when rendering particles on the farm. I have sent my file to Darcy to take a look at, I didn’t post up the entire error message earlier so here’s another copy :

We’re seeing this in two separate files. This is the error message related to the first file (which I’ve sent to Darcy). I’m looking into the second file now and will hopefully have some sample error messages in a while.

On an unrelated note we also find that when we submit Partitions to the farm the Deadline dialogue box seems to randomly switch the pools and groups during the submission process.

Once again sorry for not providing clear information, you guys are always incredibly helpful and quick to respond and it’s greatly appreciated.

cheers

Hi Ben,

I haven’t been able to reproduce your crash using the file you sent yet. One thing I’d like you to try though is submit the file without the render element and see if that is the cause. Let me know how that goes.

Also, can you confirm that you are using the latest version? Its 1.6.0.43376 and should be visible at the top of the Krakatoa GUI rollout.

Hello,

So a few weeks later and I think we’re figuring out what the issue could be. This was the most telling part of the error :

(Trapped SEH Exception in CurRendererRenderFrame(): Access Violation

Which led me to believe it was to do with rights and access privileges on our server. We’ve tried everything … rendering to different servers, rendering locally etc with no result. Finally we tried turning off render elements (we had a Krakatoa Zdepth in there) and it seems to render without any errors. This SEH exception has crept into a number of our files so we’re certain that it’s not due to a corrupt file.

Does this help narrow it down at all Darcy ?.

thank you
ben

and yes … sorry for the delay … the about box confirms that it’s 1.6.0.43376

That information is perfect, thank you. Hopefully I’ll narrow down the exact problem as soon as possible.
