License Server Restart – DNS Resolution Issues

Our studio is currently testing Deadline on three workstations and 10 render machines. We will eventually roll out deadline to 60+ machines.

We had Deadline running fine for about two weeks. We restarted a server (for a problem with a different program), this server manages all our FlexLM licenses, including Deadline licenses. Since that restart, all machines running Deadline can not find any host by DNS name.

Workstations running deadline can access machines by IP address.

Other workstations (not running deadline) do not have this issue.

When we restarted the server which manages the licenses, all workstations and render machines were still running deadline launcher (and a few were running monitor).

My questions:

  1. How do we fix this - Has anyone experienced this problem before?
  2. Was there something about the way we restarted the server with relationships to the workstations/render machines that caused this problem?
  3. If #2 is yes – what is the process to do this that will not create this issue?

Thanks

Deadline doesn’t touch anything low level enough to knock out DNS query results. I would check the network settings on those three machines and see what DNS server they’re using.

I have a few follow up questions before I make a guess as to what the issue might be.

  1. Are all 13 machines unable to find machines via host name?
  2. What host names can’t be looked up? Those of other Deadline machines, or the license server?
  3. Do you have an internal DNS server, or are your machines automatically finding each other’s host names?
  4. Was the restarted machine a master browser? If you don’t know, that’s fine.
  5. Are you using Samba on the machine you restarted? (relates to #4)
  6. What OS are your machines?
