Maxwell: render finished but restarts

Hi,
I am geting a strange error on some Maxwell co-op renders. The render on a node finishes successfully but then I get a non 0 exit code and the render starts again.

Hello,

If you are certain everything is going swimmingly, and there should not be a failure, even though Maxwell is exiting as if there was one, we might be able to code in an exception to not die on that particular code, but there should really be an examination of what that numerical exit means at some point. Let us know.

Hi, Maxwell only has two codes. 0 & 1 ok & error basically. You should get a process exit code:0 for a successful Maxwell render.

It looks like the final mxi / image output is not being written back to the output folder and is failing, therefore Deadline thinks the job is not complete and spawns the task again.

I would check the z:\ folder path permissions are allowing your rendernodes to write the mxi and png. Simple way to check is start Maxwell.exe load an mxi and try to save the image output to the same folder.
I would also suggest using UNC filepaths instead of mapped drives. If one slave doesn’t have that path mapped, it will fail when trying to write the render. ie:- \MACHINENAME\Project\CGI\MaxwellData\MXI\CTN_65_Instagram_Headlight\

Is the mxi and image output appearing in the output folder when the ‘Render finished successfully’ line appears?

Can you paste the info from the Maxwell log file, not the Deadline output? You’ll can find a bit more info in that log. You can grab the Maxwell logs from C:%users%\My Documents\Maxwell\logs
Make sure you have ‘Save logs’ and verbose:debug set in the Maxwell.exe preferences when you have it open if you have no logs there already. If Maxwell is not already saving these logs, you would need to run the job again to produce them. (Set SL to co-op 8 otherwise you’ll need another 8hrs to get to the end.)

I did a quick look and exit code -1073741818 maps to “Invalid Handle” in Windows, so it looks like Maxwell died probably from an invalid file handle based on Tim’s comments.

For mapped drives, you can also force Deadline to map them for you which should avoid possible annoying unmapping problem:

Thanks for the info. I already figured that it failed when it tried to write to the file server. So far the error only occurred this once and all later renderings went fine. So I guess it was just a temporary issue with the server.

It would be great if Deadline would not delete the rendered file and start over. Then I could collect the files and merge them manually.

I dug into that, and we move the MXI or any successful output if the task was cancelled.

Do you think it would be safe to copy it over on any error? I would like Tim’s thoughts here too since you’re both more seasoned here.

My preferred behavior would be that Deadline would

  • try again to copy the file after a while
  • not delete the MXI file (in the local rendernode when local rendering is on)

  • mark the job or task as failed

Then I can collect any results that might be in the local Deadline folder by hand and restart the job / task if needed.

If a task errors and restarts then the current task output mxi should be returned to the output folder, however and I fear this may have been the case here, if Maxwell.exe/Deadline can not copy the rendered file to the output location, for what ever reason, then it’s always going to restart unless the task is failed, suspended or completed.
Copying the mxi if the task restarts, needs to be done before it actually restarts the rendering, because the same file will be overwritten as soon as the first sample level update occurs, resetting the render progress to zero. Because of this, you could not try to copy the file again, as it will be the new version if the task has restarted.

FYI Maxwell starts the render, creates a local .mxi file. When the next Sample level update is finished, Maxwell writes a .mxi_tmp file which it then renames to replace the .mxi. This allows the previous file some protection during saves to the hdd.

You might need to copy the main mxi on each update, which might be possible through a commandline argument for Maxwell, but I need to double check. So we would essentially save 2 copies of the mxi, one locally which is then transferred to the designated output folder when the render completes and a second to a backup folder. Again this will have issues if the task restarts, as the copy will be overwritten as well, so an incremental copy would be needed which Maxwell won’t do.
Perhaps Deadline could perform the file transfer when Maxwell outputs an exit code of anything greater than 0, ie a fail

Yes, annoyingly the Deadline Maxwell submit job from monitor option ‘Do not delete intermediate files’ has no effect on the local files and only applies to the output folder and will keep the node mxi files after the merge is complete.

If the local files were not deleted by Deadline, you could keep a copy when the task/job finishes, fails, etc etc In fact Maxwell standalone and Studio uses a temp folder location when specified and has the option to keep intermediate files as well.

I’ll check the syntax for mxi duplication during rendering and post back later.

There maybe a workaround in the task failure detection settings for Deadline, again I need to check this, but eamsler could probably clarify this better than I. A logical option would be for a failed Maxwell task not to restart until the user confirms.

If not then a custom Python script event plug-in listening for failure detection, could be an option too. This would be the quicker option than waiting for V7.3 or the next full version, depending on coding involved for Thinkbox to do this.

Deadline could either use a new folder if a task is restarted or wait with the restart of a failed task until a timeout occurs. Until the timeout occurs, Deadline could try to copy the file.

I guess we need an option “Do not delete local files if a render fails.”.

Yes, I used that too often :wink:

That would be my preferred solution.
