Media access on Deadline config

Hi guys, I have a little workflow question. Let’s say I have a 20 node renderfarm based on Deadline. When I submit a job to the Deadline server, will it manage to send the media to the node with the request or will the nodes have to access the folder where the source material is? And when the node had rendered the frames, does it send the frames to the server or directly to the destination folder?

I’m trying to figure out if me Deadline Server is connected to a SAN where the media is and where the renders are sent, do I have to buy SAN licenses for all the nodes or will the server work as an access point?
