Newbie question

Hello all,

I am so new to the business and to deadline. Sorry if this place is just for professionals and my question may seem silly but I have been dealing with this for three days in documentation and tutorials and if you could help me I would be glad.

I have two laptops and just for educational purposes I am trying to get some renders on deadline. I have used one of them as both repository and client and the other as only the client. I have max 2012 installed on the repository and I have installed the max script on this machine. I use monitor on both machines but when rendering starts only the one with max installed (repository) performs the whole renders and the other one seems as starting job from the status but it never starts and the whole frames are rendered by the same laptop.

I have found out that I have to configure the “configure plug-ins” - “3ds max” part but I could not find what to write there as 3ds max 2012 executable, should it address the repository max address as network address (though I have tried that it again does not start rendering) or should I install another max to the client also and as the executable I should write this address? Also is there anything wrong that I am doing?

Thank you for your time,

You should have 3dsmax installed on each machine you plan to render on. Preferably, they should be installed to the same path across the machines. For example, you could install 3dsmax 2012 to “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2012” on every machine. The reason for using the same path is that it makes it easier when configuring the executable path in the Plugin Configuration. If they are all installed to “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2012”, you only need the one entry “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2012\3dsmax.exe” in the plugin config.

This is covered in the Considerations documentation here:

There are some other useful tips there that you can consider.

Hope this helps!
