Is it a ‘single frame’ type file (not a sequence) but not set to 'load single frame only? (or something similar along those lines?)

As JClarke suggested, if the file that was picked does NOT contain a frame number, the PRT Loader will attempt to give it one by default.

So if you picked a file called “c:\temp\partitions\particles.prt”, PRT Loader will normally try to load “c:\temp\partitions\particles0000.prt” on frame 0, “c:\temp\partitions\particles0042.prt” on frame 42 and so on. If these don’t exist, it will fail.

To disable this file sequence behavior, you have to either check “Load Single Frame Only” or rename the file to “c:\temp\partitions\particles0000.prt” and set the “Limit To Custom Range” to Start:0 End:0 to force the reloading of the file 0000 on every frame. (The latter approach is useful if you intend to do dynamic stuff using Magma, because “Single Frame Only” caches the particles and an animated Magma modifier would not update the viewports correctly).
