hi ryan,
we are about to order our RED ONE camera.
as you might know it will eventually come with software called REDCINE which converts RED´s proprietary format into DPX, TIFF, QT, etc…
i´ve read that it will have command line support as well.
i just had a brilliant idea that you guys write a deadline plugin for that tool!
on a single computer (even octacore) i assume a conversion time from 4-10 sec a frame… that is quite a long time if you have to convert footage of a feature…it would be awesome to have a renderfarm doing that job for you, wouldn´t it?
with all the publicity around the RED i am sure you could convince quite a bunch of people to buy deadline just because of that feature…
just a suggestion, hope you consider it!
cheers

Hi Timor,
Thanks for the info! The fact that it has command line support should
make it quite easy to write a Deadline plugin for it. I’ve logged this
as a feature request, and we will likely explore this possibility when
we’re re-tooling the plugins for Deadline 3.0.
Cheers,
- Ryan

hi ryan,
awesome, if that would be a feature of deadline 3.0 already, i would be stoked…
our camera will not arrive before 12-16 month, so plenty of time here.
make sure you don´t forget the massive press release if you implement redcine into deadline!
cheers,
timor
p.s. can´t wait for deadline 3.0!
Is there any more news on REDCINE support?
Cheers,
Jon
Hey Jon,
We just downloaded the latest REDCINE beta for XP, and we’re not seeing any command line support. Do you know if it’s possible to do any batch processing with REDCINE in its current state?
Cheers,
- Ryan
Hi Ryan,
Sorry for the late reply.
To be honest, I’m not sure about batch processing in Redcine - a quick look around the web seems to indicate that it can’t. I’m just looking into the possibility of using a RED camera on an upcoming project so I need to do more research anyway. However, the fact that After Effects can now work with native RED files might mean that Redcine is less necessary.
Thanks,
Jon
hi jon and ryan,
the only way to batch convert R3D files currently is to use REDLINE which comes with REDalert. unfortunately, it´s mac only
i don´t know if it´s of much use right now to write a plugin for deadline if the mac version is not even properly relased (correct me if i am wrong).
this is a good post that explains a bit:
reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15109
a handy example script:
reduser.net/forum/showpost.p … ostcount=3
right know most people use rubbermonkey:
rubbermonkeysoftware.com/sup … xtract.asp
hope this helps,
timor
Ah! That explains it then. Red workflow isn’t to be approached lightly!
Jon
Thanks for the info. The Mac version of Deadline is still in beta, but we’ll add REDLINE support to our feature request list.
Cheers,
- Ryan
i just had some thoughts on how one could approach the R3D conversion with deadline in the near future:
AE and premiere CS4 support r3d files native with the latest update (which we don´t have yet, so i cannot test…)
A convenient way to convert an EDL coming from avid of FCP to a dpx sequence would be to load it into the premiere timeline and then pass that to AE. In AE one could simply submit the workspace to deadline and everything would be transcoded/rendered like a normal AE workspace.
I´ll test my results as soon as we have CS4…
currently we have conversion times for 1h R3D to Avid quicktime (dual quadcore machine) = 41 hours! so renderfarm support would be highly appreciated!
cheers,
timor
Hi,
I’ve literally just received my upgrade of CS4 and installed it hoping to test out the r3d support. However, what they don’t tell you is that the RED support plugin hasn’t been released yet! As soon as it’s available, I’ll install it and let you know what the importing and workflow is like. I can install it on the render farm and see how Deadline handles it.
Regards,
Jon
Hi,
I’ve now installed the recently released CS4 RED plugins and redcode footage now works native within AE. I’m going to be installing AE CS4 on our render farm this week and will let you know how a test conversion goes. However, the fact that it imports fine means there shouldn’t be an issue.
Regards,
Jon
