Remote slave in license free mode

How do I get to use a second machine on the network while in license free mode? Deadline Monitor doesn’t see it.

Thanks,

Robert

Hello,

Is there any indication in the slave log of the new machine as to what it is seeing when it tries to connect to the repository and database? That would be a decent start for us. Thanks.

This is what I get in the log:

The Slave is running in LICENSE-FREE MODE because a license could not be found, and there are two or less Slaves in the Deadline Repository.
To run more than two Slaves, you must purchase a license for each Slave you wish to run. For more information, please email sales@thinkboxsoftware.com.

Ok, doing some progress here. Turns out the remote computer had the repository set to the local one. So I changed it to the host machine’s and now it seems to work. But the problem now is that it can’t find the files, probably because they are stored on Dropbox and the paths are different from one machine to the other.

UPDATE: I checked the file path and it’s good. The drive is properly mounted on the remote computer. Here’s the render log:

This path is ok on the remote computer.

SECOND UPDATE:

I restarted both the slave and the monitor on the remote machine and now it started rendering… but… the maya batch process is using 0.1% of the CPU. I don’t get any error messages. Now I’m really stuck.

Hello,

Can I ask what kind of CPU usage you are seeing when you run it outside of Deadline, if you have? Seems a bit odd to only see 0.01% of a CPU usage for a Maya scene.

Outside Deadline it’s 800% cpu! All 8 cores running like crazy.

Hi there,

I have to admit I haven’t read this thread very carefully, but whenever Maya isn’t using enough CPU some render flag alarm bells always go off in mu head. From experience, the ‘auto detect’ settings for CPU affinity doesn’t always work that well.

Are you using Mental Ray? If so, you might be interested in the thread in this forum where I got help to set up some default render flag arguments.

Cheers,
Daniel

I saw today that I have this problem also when I render straight from Maya. I don’t understand why as I never experienced something like that since I’ve been using Maya… in 97! So the problem lies somewhere else. I need to either save the file under another name of change the frame range in order to get it to work. Strange.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,

Robert

Hi,
As you have eliminated Deadline out of the equation now, have you upgraded to the latest Maya 2014 service pack (SP4) for OSX? Looking through the release notes for SP1,2,3 & 4, I couldn’t see any obvious note describing this exact issue. However, Autodesk support will obviously ask you to run the latest version if you contact them!
Let us know if this helps at all?
Mike
