"Retrieving Particles" is very slow

Hello,
after Bobo helped me out in this topic here… viewtopic.php?f=22&t=11461
…I ran into the next problem. Following the tips Bobo provided, I was able to increase the particle amount to around 400mio. But everytime I try to render, the “retrieving particles”-phase is extremely long, around 45min in my case. The prt sequence is on my hard drive, it is 20 frames long. Are there any settings I might be missing?

Regards

Oliver

If you are repopulating the base particles to 400 million each time you render, you will have to wait for the Repopulation processing.
If you are happy with your Repopulation settings, you could bake the 400 million to PRTs on disk, trading off disk space for performance.
Of course, loading 400 million from disk will also take a few minutes. If you save multiple partitions, say 10 partitions of 40 million each, and enable the “>Fast PRT Loading” option in the Main Controls, the loading time could go down depending on how fast your hard drive is. If you have an SSD drive or a Fusion-io card, it could take just a few seconds. See this video around 4min 50sec:
thinkboxsoftware.com/news/20 … rview.html
The machine there had a Fusion-io card and 16 cores / 32 threads. It loaded 180 million particles in 5.6 SECONDS. But the Fusion-io is the fastest (and most expensive) storage solution. Still I believe a good SSD drive could load 10x40 million particles in under 30 seconds on a multi-core machine.
