Submitting to deadline ona remote cluster

I have a technical question.
Is it possible to submit a render/sim remotely. Let’s say i am on my notebook and could submit to another vendor’s farm. How would the procedure look like (resource collect, if necessary > deadline submitter with remote URLs/ports)? Or is it best behavior to remote desktop connect to a machine on the remote farm and set it up locally as if i would be there?

Sorry for the vague description(partly due to lack of IT knowledge admittedly) but and help/tutorial is much appreciated. For me as a remote worker bee in a lot of cases i would LOVE to make this possible and as easy as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Anselm

Hi Anselm,

It is possible. You can either submit to a remote repository directly over the VPN, or you can setup a “local” repository on your laptop and submit to that, and then transfer the job afterwards:
thinkboxsoftware.com/deadlin … ansfering/

For the latter option to work, you would need to run a slave on your laptop to do the transfer. The nice thing is that the original submission is done quickly, and you can continue working while waiting for the slave to do the transfer. If you were submitting directly, your application (ie: 3dsmax) would lock up while waiting for the submission to finish.

NOTE though that Deadline does not handle the bundling up of the assets, with the lone exception for 3dsmax if you are using the option to copy external file references to the repository. In all other cases, you would have to make sure the assets paths, and your output paths, exist in the remote location.

Depending on your application, the exporting of your assets may be easy or a real pain (I know AE and C4D have one click options for this which is quite handy). If there is a lot of work involved in bundling these assets, you may find it easier to just remote in and submit that way.

Hope this is helpful. Let us know if you have any additional questions!

Thanks for the info, Ryan! Appreciate it
I might have to bug you again once the job is a go and i have access to the remote location.
So the local and the remote repository have to be in sync then for it to work? Or do you just need to know the directory of the new repository?
The directories would be the same i hope, same goes for assets like textures if needed.

thanks!
Ansi

You just need to know the directory of the new repository. However, it’s also a good idea to maintain the same Pools, Groups, and Limits across both repositories.
