Trouble installing Krakatoa

Neither Google nor the search function were able to help me, so I’ll give it a try and open a new thread for my problem.

I’ve downloaded the latest version (1.6.0.43178) from software.primefocusworld.com/ and installed it on my Windows 7 x64 with 3D Studio Max 2010. Every time I try to use the maxpluginhelper.exe the application crashes and cannot fullfill its task. I then have tried to run that program with the command prompt and still received errors. Giving up on that I simply copy/pasted the files from the plugins folder of the Krakatoa installation to the root, plugin and scripts/startup folder of my 3Ds Max installation. I am now able to choose Krakatoa as renderer but I am not able too use it as I get errors like “-- Unknown property: ‘InitRenderer’ in undefined” and am not able to launch the GUI.

Anyone knows what to do?

At the bottom of the page, there is a TROUBLESHOOTING section which discusses what to do if the installation of Krakatoa succeeded, but the modifying of the plugin.ini failed.

Troubleshooting

* If after installing Krakatoa on Windows Vista or Windows 7 you can see the installation folders under c:\Program Files (x86)\Prime Focus\ on 64 bit OS or c:\Program Files\Prime Focus\ on 32 bit but there is no Krakatoa in the Assign Renderer dialog of 3ds Max, chances are the Windows UAC was not turned off and the plugin.ini file could not be modified.
      o In this case, you can disable the UAC and run the "Add Krakatoa to 3ds Max" wizard again, or
      o Add the paths to the Krakatoa DLR and the Helium DLX manually by editing the plugin.ini file. 

In Vista and Windows 7, 3ds Max provides an alternative, user-defined plugin.ini file, typically found under
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2010 - 64bit\enu\Plugin.UserSettings.ini
for the 64 bit version of 3ds Max 2010 (the other versions follow the same general naming rules)

Inside this file, you can enter the two paths manually under the [Directories] category:
Helium=C:\Program Files (x86)\Prime Focus\Krakatoa\3dsMax2010\x64\Helium
Krakatoa=C:\Program Files (x86)\Prime Focus\Krakatoa\3dsMax2010\x64
assuming your are running a 64 bit OS and 3ds Max 2010.

On 32 bit OS, the paths would be
Helium=C:\Program Files\Prime Focus\Krakatoa\3dsMax2010\Win32\Helium
Krakatoa=C:\Program Files\Prime Focus\Krakatoa\3dsMax2010\Win32
and for the other 3ds Max versions, you would have to replace 3dsMax2010 with the correct folder name.

In addition, there is a page about the way to distribute Krakatoa to render nodes which also applies to your case as it explains how the startup process works and why copying Krakatoa plugin files into Max folders is a BAD IDEA:

Also note that in Max versions prior to 3ds Max 2011, you have to copy the file TBB.DLL from the correct plugin folder containing the MaxKrakatoa.DLR file into the root of 3ds Max. (Max 2011 comes with its own version so this is not necessary). UAC off and Administrator rights will be necessary to be able to copy a file to the root of Max. The Wizard is supposed to do this, but if it fails for you, you will have to do it manually…

For some reason I’m facing the same problem. My UAC is disabled. Does Krakatoa 1.6 work with 3ds Max Design 2010 x64? Its the same installation file provided here. MAXPLUGINHELPER.exe for some reason crashes. If I reinstall back the old version then it just works fine. I dint have that problem with the previous versions.

Is there any other way of installing it?
