Updating to 4.0 final breaks all render nodes

Sorry for the long post, but this is pretty critical to us.

We just updated to 4.0 final today (from 4.0 beta), and now all our 3ds max renders are failing. I have included two different error messages below, as they seem to alternate arbitrarily. In the first one, I have bold-ed and underlined a line I found rather suspect. These appear both with the slave in full GUI mode and running as a service.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the client package on a single render node with the same result. Watching the node’s interface, the slave runs until it hits the line “0: INFO: Waiting for connection from 3dsmax,” at which point it hangs. The deadlineStartupMax program window is shown in the taskbar for a short while, after which it disappears. In the task manager, 3dsmax.exe is running, but seems frozen/inactive, with <100 MB of RAM usage and no CPU activity.

Just remembered that Backburner uses server.exe as its slave process. I’ll try reinstalling BB and see if this makes any difference.

Nope, same problem after reinstalling BB. We’re using 2008.1.1, just for reference. As mentioned, Deadline 4.0 beta worked perfectly with this same config.

Next thought: could this be license-related?

The main reason I didn’t think of mentioning that is that Deadline is usually very thorough about telling you when your license is bunk/expired.

Just curious, did you get a license for the Final 4.0 build (which is different from the Beta 4.0 one)?

No, we have yet to receive a new license file. I have submitted a request however.

This isn’t related to Deadline licensing. That would prevent from the slave from running in the first place.

I can’t reproduce this problem here with 4.0 final. I’ve tested 3dsmax 2008, 2009, and 2010 rendering just now, and there were no problems.

So the only thing that changed between these renders working and not working was upgrading from the 4.0 beta to the 4.0 release? There wasn’t any additional software installed on these machines (ie: 3dsmax 2010)? Is the version of backburner you have installed the version that came with 3dsmax 2009?

Also, have you tried running the repository installer again? Maybe the 3dmsax plugin was corrupted during the previous install, and running the repository installer again should fix that if that’s the case.

Cheers,

  • Ryan

Hi,

I have this problem too now it seems, although I am still running the beta build.

It worked fine when I used Deadline to render something about 2 weeks ago, nothing has changed since then and now this same error connecting to server.exe thing.

I have just requested a trial license for dl4 final, so will try that when it comes in.

added the log file, the stuff in bold is new and never seen it before

Here’s an interesting question: The new 4.0 repository installer has a setup wizard at the beginning now. I just clicked through this last time, since I assumed it would acquire all the currently set values from the existing 4.0 beta installation. Is it possible a value or setting in there is responsible?

That’s correct. We were rendering things with max literally the day before the update was released. We haven’t done an update rollout on the boxes in over a month, so the software config hasn’t changed. We’ve had max 2010 running for a loooooong time on the nodes as well, with no problems. Same version of Backburner that has been working fine as well.

I just tried re-installing the repository. Same problem.

squeakybadger: those highlighted messages are debug output from 3dsmax - I’ve seen those before, and as far as I know, it’s not a problem, but it might be an indication that backburner is having some problems…

nrusch: the settings in the setup wizard wouldn’t be responsible for this. The reason I asked if you had max 2010 installed was that when we upgraded to max 2010 here, it broke 2008 rendering because of the new version of backburner that was installed. So to confirm, do you only see this problem with 3dsmax 2009, or do you see it with 2010 as well?

[EDIT]: this was only on our production farm though - we don’t have any problems with any versions of 3dsmax on our test farm.

Hi Ryan,

Updated to the 4.0 final and still the same prob. Tried the 3dsmax workaround on/off but still the same. Ill repair max2010/backburner and see if that helps.

Same error with renders done in max 2010. We only run 2009 and 2010 on the farm, and prior to the update, both worked perfectly.

squeakybadger: We just found a bug when rendering with 3dsmax 2010 with user profiles enabled that would prevent our lightning.dlx plugin from being loaded at startup, but I’m not sure you’re reaching this point yet. Otherwise you would see an error like this:

Regardless, I’ve attached a patched 3dsmax.py file that you can install by unzipping the attached file to \your\repository\plugins\3dsmax. This may or may not help, but it at least removes one variable.

nrusch: Can you downgrade to the last beta version you were using and see if the problem persists? According to squeakybadger, the problem started occurring for them while they were still on a beta version (and they didn’t do anything between when it started working and when it didn’t). I don’t expect the patch I’ve attached to work for you either, since it only affects Max 2010 with profiles enabled. So it doesn’t affect 2009 rendering.

both: Can you attempt a backburner render on one of your nodes that is failing with Deadline? Just run the backburner manager, server, and monitor on one machine, boot up max on that machine, and submit a job. This is just to ensure that backburner is working properly. If it is, another test you can try is using the 3ds Command plugin:
software.primefocusworld.com/sof … ommand.php

This uses 3dmaxcmd.exe to perform the renders. This isn’t meant to be a permanent solution, it’s just that the results from these 2 tests might help us narrow down the problem.
3dsmax.zip (15.4 KB)

Hmm, this patch may not fix the problem I’m seeing, but it doesn’t introduce any new problems, so if you’ve already installed it, don’t worry about reverting (I can post the original 3dmax.py file later if it turns out a revert is necessary).

That being said, there is still a problem with max 2010 with user profiles enabled that we need to figure out.

Cheers,

  • Ryan

Another update

Rendering with Backburner works perfectly fine.

Downgrading to previous Deadline versions does not solve the problem. Same errors.

OK, cool, thanks for the update. Once we get the results from the 3ds Command plugin test, we will go from there.

The fact though that downgrading doesn’t help makes me wonder if there is something else causing this problem, since that would indicate that the upgrade to 4.0 final wasn’t the true cause. Nothing changed with regards to our 3dmax plugin during at least the last month of the beta program, which is why it seems strange that upgrading to 4.0 final would cause this issue.

I also have an update on the “2010 + user profile enabled” problem. A bug was introduced with Max 2010 (design edition too) where the -p argument to 3dsmax.exe doesn’t work with absolute paths (ie: C:\path\to\plugin.ini). However, when user profiles are disabled, you can copy the temporary plugin.ini to the 3dsmax install folder and just use “-p dl.ini” to point to it, and it resolves the path just fine.

However, if user profiles are enabled, this workaround doesn’t seem to work. Originally, we were copying dl.ini to the user profile folder, and the path I posted previously copies dl.ini to the 3dsmax install folder instead. However, that doesn’t seem to make a difference. So if you guys are using user profiles, I would suggest disabling that for now. This can be done by editing the useUserProfiles entry in the InstallSettings.ini file in the 3dsmax install folders. We’ll continue to see if there is a workaround, but if not, hopefully Autodesk will get this issue resolved in 2011 (they already know the bug exists).

Cheers,

  • Ryan

Also, the fact that it hit both of you at the same time is strange. Do you guys have automatic Windows updates? Maybe a particular auto-update is causing these problems?

Our server downloads updates automatically to speed up deployment, but I roll out update packages to the render nodes manually. They do not do any automatic updating.

Also, submitting the same scene file(s) via the 3dsCmd method works. This is on 4.0 final again. However, the monitor does not update the task/job progress at all (just says frame 0 has been rendering the whole time, even though I can watch the slave rendering multiple frames). But that may be expected behavior.
