Upgrading from 6.2 to 7.1

So I am getting ready to upgrade to the newest deadline, and I had a few questions.
I noticed there is a license server installer and I was told that I would need to use this to update the FLEXLM license server stuff.

Is this true? Cant I just update the license file of the existing Flexlm install?
Reason I ask is I am worried that if I run this installer, it might botch the the other FLexlm licenses running as services?
Not sure.

I upgraded recently too and my advice would be be prepare to downgrade if it does n’t work for you. Since I upgraded I can’t remote control many of my slave and they don’t open on startup, I have to go on each of them and kiil the process and restart everytime. So as soon as I get some time I will roll back to 6.2 unless thinkbox support succeed at finding the problem (for that I have tio find some time to do a remote session with them).

Hey Strob, Thanks for being helpful here. Since we don’t know what causes your problems are yet, can you hold off until we can make guarantees on the problems and solutions? If you need to vent about it, I’m always available either by e-mailing directly (edwinamsler@thinkboxsoftware.com) or by phone call (see signature, it’s even free ).

As for the OP’s license server. It’s entirely possible to upgrade manually. The big issue we had came with the 11.10 license server we’d been shipping for years. If that hasn’t changed you should be fine. The only reason we don’t recommend manual installation is to keep everything consistent for us in support. The license server won’t touch anything outside of its folder though, so you should be safe.

The only conflict we ever hit anymore are port numbers, and I want to get that resolved either by modifying our license cutting process or making the installer smart enough to change it for itself.

Edwin,
Ok, so I feel safer, whats the best way to unpack and upgrade the license server manually.

What am I looking for to make sure its doable? How do I check if I have the 11.10 license server?

Update
My Thinkbox LMGRD is running 11.10.03

You can grab 11.12 from here:
thinkboxsoftware.com/license … all-files/

I still need to put the newer downloads in there, but the service packs haven’t been terribly important since then. Most of our uploads have been to make the installers more featureful (they add firewall rules on Windows now!).

Give it a try and if there are problems don’t hesitate to let me know and I’ll bundle up the newer builds for you.

Thanks,
Ill give it a go.

Shouldnt be an issue updating the lmgrd and continuing with the old license file right?

Gotta do this upgrade in phases.

Nope, it’ll be fine. In fact, the license file format hasn’t changed in my 4ish years handling the license server. The only thing that has broken in that time has been the protocol for the client libraries to talk to the server. That’s happened about twice, and the upgrade process is fairly painless.

So I updated the files in the win64.zip archive with the the 11.12 version, and now the thinkbox license server wont start.
If I copy back the old files, it starts up fine.

Im not getting anything in the log file either. it just starts and stops.

We had a call about this today.

The situation is that we now provide a set of 64bit binaries for the licensing and Windows stores registry settings for 64 and 32bit apps in different locations. The problem was that the settings specified by the 32bit lmtools were unreadable by the 64bit lmgrd. Removing the service from the old lmtools and re-creating them in the 64bit one got things working great.

Sorry Edwin, I should have some time next week to find the causes of my problems. I’ll call you then. I’m sure you will find the problem and it’s probably due to my bad.
