Hi,
I’m having a bit of trouble understanding the different user types with DL. Let’s say that I’m only a normal user, there is nothing stopping me from just changing to a different user to take advantage of their power user status for my own devious intentions.
What is the plan for user type in the future? it would be great to be able to make different types of user to our own specificaiton rather than just having two levels.
Also, I’d like to be able to lock specific users to different repositories
Any comments welcome!
Josh.
Currently, Deadline essentially uses a “trust” system with regards to
users. There aren’t any immediate plans for improving the user system,
although a simple addition could be to add a password option for users.
If users can trust everyone else, than they could leave it blank.
Otherwise, they would be prompted for a password whenever they open the
Monitor, or when they submit a job to the queue. There could also be an
option that would only allow super users to add new users, and
essentially “lock out” anyone they don’t want to add.
Cheers,
- Ryan

Hi Ryan,
I see! but doesn’t that circumvent the idea of having different types of users < :
If I was going to make a wishlist for users it would be this :
- password protected access when logging on. ie, each user enters a password when the monitor is launched.
- a user system where you can add new user types, and specify what those user types can do. ie, instead of having two levels, we have the ability to define new user types and then say what they can do, like ‘change repository’.
The reason we want this is because we’re planning on having more than one render farm in the office. It occurred to me that we could just have different repositories, and different groups of servers that are only visible to specific users but now I see it’s not like that.
Thanks
