You need to add this path to the plugins defaults:
C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\3dsmax 2012 for x64\tools\vrimg2exr.exe -
You need to add the -datawindow flag.

Added to the wish list.
Can you let us know what -datawindow does exactly? The command line usage for it doesn’t go into much detail.
Thanks!
-datawindow (which I just added to our submitter) is what sets it to auto-crop the EXR data window. That way if you have a 10x10px cg element way in the background you still have your 2k plate as the format size but it only stores a travelling ‘data window’ of the actual image that is a 10x10 px image. This dramatically increases performance as it doesn’t have to unzip an entire 2k scanline. Also speaking of which I’m not sure what the defaults are but I would suggest ZIPS for the default compression.
+1 for ZIPS and datawindow ON as the default.
