Wake On Lan for Macs config

Hello,

I am trying to figure out the correct power management configurations for our 20 mac mini After Effects render farm on Deadline 7.2.
From within power management if I run “pmset sleepnow” command I can get it to sleep after a certain amount of time but I can’t seem to wake them up in a good fashion.

Currently all of the machines have the “Wake for network access” ticked on in the Energy Saver System Preferences.
As a test I send a pmset sleepnow command via remote control - the computer goes to sleep as expected.
(But even though the computer is asleep, the slave instances are still registered as idle in the Monitor.)
Submitting a job doesn’t seem to wake the slaves.
I sent a Start Machine command from the Monitor and successfully wake it from sleep.
Slave instances picks up the job and the rendering starts but after a couple of minutes computer went back to sleep mode - so it says that it’s rendering but the progress bar stalls… until I send another Start Machine command from the Monitor.
Slave instances rendering progress resumes but a couple minutes later it goes back to sleep mode. etc

What’s the recommended configurations for WOL on OSX?
Thanks!

Hello,

Just want to give you an update on this, turns out that the issue with OSX turning off right after it wakes up from sleep can be fixed by modifying the com.apple.Boot.plist (Add darkwake=8 then restart.)

More info here…

After changing the above, the power management for macs work just fine with pmset sleepnow.

Thanks

Hey,

Firstly, sorry for the slow/lack of response here. I’m honestly not sure why it got missed until now. I’m pleased you were able to figure out the problem and thanks very much for the solution as well. I just tested this on my Mac Book Pro and it indeed seems to resolve this issue nicely! So, I’ve gone ahead and updated our Power Management docs with this little nugget of gold from yourself!

+1 for Deadline power users on this forum! :ugeek:

Thanks again!
Mike
