What should the "Repository Path" be set to during install?

Hi Im installing Deadline on my pc windows 7. This maybe a stupid question but what am I supoposed to choose for my “repository path” in the set up ?
If I choose the deadline repository it installed at \DAVESHP\DeadlineRepository I get the error message "Not a valid repository: UnauthorisedAccessException: Access is denied to directory \DAVESHP\DeadlineRepository

Do i just ceate a folder called repository anywhere and use this ? I want to set up a 2 machine render farm with my main pc “DAVESHP” and my laptop "DAVES -HP-LAPTOP"both running windows 7, so does the folder have to be in a certain location or can i just create one on my C drive of my main machine ? Many Thanks

At the risk of insulting your intelligence, did you create a shared folder that will be used for the repository? The installer won’t set this part up for you, to my knowledge - it expects you to do that part of things. To set up a shared folder, you can use a Windows wizard - follow a guide like this one if you are uncertain what to do : techrepublic.com/blog/window … izard/3180

i.e. can you actually mount \DAVESHP\DeadlineRepository on DAVES -HP-LAPTOP?

HI Thanks for the reply. Dont worry your not insulting anything  I didnt set up a shared folder before installing as the install instructions says install it first then make it shareable after.
also when installing it asks for the path location but says this can be set after installing from the Launcher which I did. the launcher asks for a path… Its already created a folder called "DeadlineRepository with all the folders it created on install, bacup, bin, client setup, slaves, jobs etc etc

This folder can be seen and opened on my laptop across the network on DAVES_HP_LAPTOP from DAVESHP it shows up as a shared folder, so why do i still get this error message when trying to select this folder that the install craeted for my repository path ? Am i supposed to create just another empty folder for this ?.. I followed the install instructions which are great untill this bit and dosnt state what this should be and where for a newbie
many thanks again

Here’s what I’d do :

  1. Install the repository on your server to the local path that you will share (e.g. D:\Deadlline\5.0) so that you end up with D:\Deadline\5.0\DeadlineRepository). Since the repository can change with major versions, this gives you the ability to test newer versions if you decide to, with the ability to move back and forward as the case may be.

  2. Share the DeadlineRepository folder as, for example, Deadline5Repository

  3. Mount the share on the node, as \server\Deadline5Repository (you can even assign this a drive letter for convenience - see 7tutorials.com/how-map-drives-windows-7 if this is unclear to you)

  4. Install the client on the node, if you haven’t done so already.

  5. During the client setup phase (relaunch this if you have already installed DL client), point the client to the repository under either the direct URL or the mounted drive letter.

That ought to work. It sounds like you did most of this, so I’m wondering if it’s a permissions thing. Can you write to that shared location from the node - just try and save a text file from notepad to it from the node (not the server)

It definitely sounds like a permission issue, as Phil suggested. Hopefully this page will be helpful:

Just make sure to set the permissions for Everyone under the share settings, AND the security settings.

Thanks very much for all your help, sorry for late reply i was away at the weekend. I uninstalled and re-installed on a different drive to my C drive doing exactly the same as I did before and it all seems fine ?. i dont know why I cant use my C drive as the location for my repositiry, but all seems good now. Ill now try and give it a first try and see if I can get some renders going using both machines. Thanks again

Glad to hear everything is working now! If you run into any additional problems, let us know!

Cheers,
