Problems with multiple slaves on one machine

Hello guys,

we are experiencing the following problem:

We are trying to run two slaves on a single machine, while BOTH slaves are running I’m getting the following error:

Error: 3dsmax startup: Error getting connection from 3dsmax: Monitored managed process “3dsmaxProcess” has exited or been terminated.

As soon as either one of the slaves is shut down the remaining one is able to render the job done. I’ve followed the instructions I’ve found in the deadline documentation and disabled the IPv6 on this machine. since it’s been known to cause problems with 3ds Max but the problem still persists.

Here is a full log of the error report as well.

Thanks in advance!

Lyubomir

Hello,

This vaguely sounds like an issue I thought we had fixed before, but I will have to have one of our devs look this over and see if they have any ideas on this.

Thanks a lot!

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Cheers!

Lyubomir

Hello,

So the first thing I would advise is updating, as you are running a beta version of Deadline. We hope to have 7.1.2 out in the next week or so, which will contain the following fix which might be causing the issue: “Read/write share permissions are now used when reading in the 3ds Max log file.”

In the meantime, 7.1.1.4 won’t hurt as an upgrade to a release version.

Additionally, can you turn on the “Kill ADSK Comms Center” option in plugin config, as it seems like this is an issue that is happening, though not the primary issue.

Lastly, can you give a bit of detail as to why you are trying to use multiple slaves? I believe 3dsMax by default multithreads very well at render time, so this is could be an issue. Are you trying to control CPU affinity? Let us know.

Hi Dwayne,

We have a lot of simulation and Krakatoa jobs that are more efficient when run on a single CPU, so we’d like to run a second server on the dual CPU machines to get some more bang for our buck. We’ll try 7.1.2 and update you on how it goes.

FYI. Multiple Slaves on the same machine will only cost you 1 x Deadline license in Deadline v7.x onwards. When it comes to 3dsMax and MultiThreading, as it does this quite well at render time, you will want to configure the slave’s CPU affinity per slave as you so wish.

Yes the licensing is one of our arguments for trying that  We haven’t check out the affinity per slave yet, sounds great.

We’ve just upgraded, but we’re still getting the same error.

I assume this is now v7.1.2.1? Is the Windows firewall enabled? If so, please can make sure these exceptions are in place:
docs.thinkboxsoftware.com/produc … iderations
Can you also enable “Kill ADSK Comms Center Process” option in 3dsmax plugin configuration:
docs.thinkboxsoftware.com/produc … figuration
(It has been improved since earlier versions)

Firewall is off, Kill ADSK comms is true, slaves are restarted, but still the one who started last is erroring out.

Can we see some more recent Deadline log reports for both slaves running on the same machine when this issue occurs?

When I disable the other server on the machine, the remaining one is working normally.

So, I’ve been trying this for a while now and so far, have been unable to reproduce. I find this line in your log interesting:

and indicates another instance of 3dsmax.exe is still running on the render node, which more than likely has crashed.

Here’s some screen-grabs of me running 2 x Deadline Slaves, both rendering different 3dsmax jobs, which both have concurrency set initially to 1, then to 2 for fun. (4 x instances of 3dsMax running, between 2 x Deadline Slaves). I tried different render jobs - scanline, mental ray, vray, corona and also randomly shutting down and starting back up one slave at a time or both slaves at the same time.

I’m thinking maybe 3dsMax 2014 is crashing for you or perhaps, it’s job/payload specific? ie: Are you running anything ‘special’ here, like a maxscript job or anything that might stand out as causing a file collision between the 2 slaves & 2 x instances of 3dsMax running? If you have a simple, demo scene file which always goes wrong for you, please do send it my way!

Thanks for checking - we’ll do some more tests when we can so we can figure that out.
