After Effects - local rendering issue since Deadline upgrade

Hey guys,

I have a weird issue with local rendering since I updated all my systems to the the newest version of Deadline (8.0.13.3). I was on 8.0.6.5 before I installed the update. Just to give you as much information as possible I also did the following things as part of our “between-years-upgrade”:

-updated windows on the server and all clients
-deinstalled the obsolete 2015 version of After Effects (using 2015.3 and 2017 only now) on all my nodes
-deleted and old unused mongoDB from version 7
-found an old autostart database7 entry, which I disabled as well

My first rendertest with all render nodes didn’t produce any output on the server. The folder was just empty. I submitted out of AE via the script. I checked ‘Include Output File Path’ and ‘Enable Local Rendering’ and set the ‘Frames per Task’ to 10.
Submitting the same project file without the ‘Enabel Local Rendering’ option is working fine. Frames are rendered and written on the server.

I checked the slaves local data folder, when I tried the local rendering option the second time and I could see the frames being rendered locally but not being copied to the network location.

It seems that Deadline ‘forgets’ to move the frames to the network location when rendering locally.

I submitted the project via the Monitor and checked the ‘Local Rendering’ option as well. This works as well. Frames are rendered to the network location. Weird thing here is that the frames doesn’t seem to be saved locally and copied to the network. It just renders directly to the network location.

I’m a little confused by now and tried to find someone with a similar problem in the forum (read almost all entries which are related to After Effects) but unfortunately couldn’t find anything helpful.

I tried to downgrade to 8.0.12.4 which didn’t make a difference. Same problem.
After Effects 2015.3 and 2017 have the same problem. I don’t want to downgrade everything to the old Deadline version since this update also made a lot of things better, so I hope someone has an idea what could cause this behaviour.

If you need any further information let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Christian

Thanks for reporting Christian!

I did some digging and found that we did change the call that copies files after the render is complete. It used to be this:

                    self.VerifyAndMoveDirectory( self.LocalFilePath, self.NetworkFilePath, False, -1 )

but was changed to this in SP12:

                    self.VerifyAndMoveDirectory( self.LocalFilePath, self.NetworkFilePath, True, 0 )

Could you make a backup of “[repo]/plugins/AfterEffects/AfterEffects.py” and try changing that line back? I’ll try doing some testing later today, but if you’re keen to try it, it may help.

Update:

After speaking with Grant over waffles, his guess is that we’re calling ExitWithSuccess() when the job completes which causes the task to finish immediately. That would mean the PostTask code for copying the completed frames isn’t called and they’re left on the render node.

Hey Christian,

I believe this could have also been do to a change that was made which appears to make it skip the post render tasks. Attached is an updated script which has this change removed.

Please let me know if this does the trick for you.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried what you suggested but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be enough.

Same thing…

Thanks for having a look into it.

Woohooo! Amazing. That did the trick.

Just wondering that nobody else has problems and reported this issue. I’m for sure not the first one trying this SP, am I ? :unamused:

Thank you very much guys… I can continue testing.

All the best for the upcoming year.

I did some more testing with the new version and the FIX you send me and I’m happy the Local Rendering is working again.

Unfortunately it has killed some nice features as well. I’m not sure if this still belongs in this topic, if not let me know and I open another thread or edit the topic.

We had two plugins for After Effects in the past which always caused problems when rendering via Deadline. These two plugins are from VideoCopilot and they seem to have problem with command line rendering.

The first one is Saber. I read in another thread that someone had a similar problem. Deadline is rendering all frames and the log shows that all are done but it does not finish the task and gets stuck there.
When I tested it with the original After Effects.py (without Local Rendering) it went through without a problem. I’m curious if we could manage to have the advantages from both worlds, since some of my operators like to use this plugin every now and then. What was the change you made in the python script?

The second one is Vibrance. This one behaves a little different at the end. It renders all frames too but exits with:

Error: Renderer returned non-zero error code, -1073741811. Check the log for more information. at Deadline.Plugins.PluginWrapper.RenderTasks(String taskId, Int32 startFrame, Int32 endFrame, String& outMessage, AbortLevel& abortLevel)
I tested this one as well before changing the python script and it had no problem at all.

Don’t get me wrong. I prefer the local rendering function over these two plugins but was quite happy that both issues have been solved in the SP13.

I was actually discussing both of these edge cases with Grant yesterday. It’s unfortunately a catch 22 here. What we do to get around those errors is to call ExitWithSuccess() in the plugin. What this does is exits immediately and skips over and finalizing steps (like copying output or caring what the exit code is).

What we might need to do is run PostRenderTask() code regardless, but I’m expecting plugins to have some issues with that. We only have three that use it:

Mobile-029:DeadlineRepository edwin.amsler$ grep -rn "ExitWithSuccess" *
plugins/AfterEffects/AfterEffects.py:604:        self.ExitWithSuccess()
plugins/FryRender/FryRender.py:202:        ExitWithSuccess()
plugins/GammaStripper/GammaStripper.py:24:        ExitWithSuccess()

I’m not sure how many clients are using it however. I’ll talk to the dev team when they’re all in next week and we’ll see what they think about the PostTasks processing.

Please excuse my late reponse, but I caught a cold over new year… back on track again.

I’m glad you are looking into this. I know this is probably not a high priority issue but it would be great if you could find a way to fix it.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Christian,

Sorry for the late reply. Here is another updated plugin which should solve both of these issues. Let me know if you have any issues with it.

Hey Grant,

Actually your reply was much faster than mine… thanks for that.

I can confirm that you are absolutely right. The local rendering issue is gone and I just tested VideoCopilot’s Saber and Vibrance. Both renderings completed successfully and the frames were copied to the network path. I’m happy!

I do some more testing and if I should find anything else I’ll let you know.

Thanks for your support.

Best regards,
Christian

Hi Grant and Edwin,

We have also just upgraded from 8.0.9 to 8.0.13.3
After having the same issues with local rendering I used your latest modified aftereffects.py and we have come across a few errors, wondering if you could shed some light on some of them as they seem to be random in nature. Logs attached.

VerifyAndMoveDirectory error.
Interestingly, the job would eventually complete after some time. ie. a job that is 700 frames long would have some 103 errors of this nature.
Wasted time is around 30 seconds per error.

I tried setting “Fail without finished message” to true in the After Effects Plugin configurations as we have been having issues with after effects completing tasks without rendering anything. But ended up with a couple of new errors instead…
ExitWithSuccessException error
Again, the jobs that has these errors would eventually complete but it takes many tries for the machines to actually start working properly. Literally every single machine on our render farm has these errors at some point at different task ID.

Found no “Finished Composition” notice
Frustratingly, these renders were actually going OK but somehow it decided to not move the files appropriately and failed for no apparent reason.

Thanks guys!

Updates on all of these:

ExitWithSuccess Error: This one just got a bump from me internally. This type of exit should not trigger an error.

VerifyAndMoveDirectory: This one is likely us not catching a problem further up. We should detect if there was no output and it’s actually what the “Fail without finished message” is supposed to guard against. Sometime AE just chooses to not output anything and we have no idea why. I believe one cause once was due to it running as a service, but that’s something you can comment on.

Found no “Finished Composition” notice: This might be due to the output mode being for a video output instead of frames. For some reason AE doesn’t feel the need to say it’s finished with those.

I think I need to get in contact with some Adobe engineers to discuss some of this stuff… The unicorns that they are.

To summarize: We need to fix the ExitWithSuccess error and it should help most of this as far as working around AE’s idiosyncrasies. I’d also check to see if any Slaves are running as a service. Unlikely to be the problem, but worth checking.

Hi Edwin,

I can confirm that all of our slaves are not running as a service.
Also might be good to note that our After Effects slaves are all running on Mac OSX 10.10.5

The found no “finished composition” notice - was definitely frames as the log says 2017-01-19 15:19:54: 0: STDOUT: PROGRESS: Format: PNG from frame 0-24

Thanks so much for looking into this, it’s frustrating that after effects in general just gets more broken with every new release and adobe isn’t doing a good job of fixing them.

Hi there,

I’ll answer inline based on your comments before. Before I forget, I need to mention how frustrating I find aerender. Oh well, we will try and do I’ll best here, as AE is frankly ‘a bit flaky’ at times. However, I’ve spent a good amount of time playing with it recently and indeed so has our support team, so I think we are getting closer to nailing most of the common issues that users encounter, which annoyingly depends on which specific version you are running of AE. Anyway, enough of the ranting…

1. VerifyAndMoveDirectory error

So, I believe the issue here is aerender is falling over on itself; perhaps the image files being rendered are really big, concurrent tasks is heavily being used, your network or file server or both, both suffering from congestion at that exact moment of it trying to render or copy the locally rendered files back to your filer. I suspect, that if you check the local Slave file paths, that the local temp Slave directory at time of rendering, isn’t getting populated with any output from aerender. Why that is, is still a bit of a mystery. As Edwin said:

So, we will need some help here from you, to help narrow this down if at all. We need to look for a pattern here.

2. ExitWithSuccessException error

OK, this one is easier to explain and is on us here. Specifically, I added an API command (one-liner) to our AE plugin recently, but it currently has a bit of an issue, so we have removed it and replaced it with equivalent functionality. Please find attached an updated AfterEffects plugin file and param file. Please backup your existing AE plugin directory and copy these 2 x updated files over. Let us know how it goes?

3. Found no “Finished Composition” notice

So, your troubles here began when you enabled the “Fail without finished message” boolean option in your AE plugin configuration. If each of your AE render tasks on your Slaves see’s the StdOut line: “Finished composition”, then we will fail out the render task. You should change this setting back to False in your AE plugin config and test again using my updated plugin above. You can thank the lovely aerender for this one, as it turns out that in certain edge cases, certain lines of StdOut such as “Finished composition” and others, fail to be pumped out of StdOut from the aerender process in time, before the process gets shutdown. Now, it might be, that in the future, we will need to consider converting our AfterEffects plugin in Deadline from a “Simple” to an “Advanced” plugin, which makes no difference to users, except, it will provide additional API tools, where we might be able to force a “pump” of StdOut from the aerender process and also, have the ability to ‘hit’ it in different ways if it decides to be annoying…again.

So, in summary, we will need help with #1 unless anything I described above, potentially makes sense and might explain the situation there to you. For #2, you should test the new attached plugin and for #3, you should change that setting back in your repo and also test again, using the attached plugin.

Finally, I should note that I hadn’t updated Edwin yet, but we are already in touch with Adobe’s engineering team and have submitted 2 x bug reports and have 1 x feature request accepted as well by them. None of which are applicable to the issues discussed here today.

Please do let us know how it goes.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for looking into this, I completely understand your frustration with aerender. I think a bit flaky is a total understatement and the sad thing is that most ae artists can’t tell the difference between the aerender process failing vs user error or some other error in general due to the unreliable nature of aerender with log outputs and the unhelpfully vague adobe error codes. Despite trying to convince them otherwise generally they would blame deadline (and me! as the farm admin) because they feel that there’s nothing wrong with their project file and it renders fine locally on their machine… sigh

Anyhoo I tried the newest .py and .param that you sent in the previous post, and it doesn’t seem to be working very well. The VerifyAndMoveDirectory might not be verifying in the right step ie. it seems to try to verify the files after they are moved and deleted from the temp directory thus Deadline thinks that the source directory is missing and errors out. (I was watching the farm and paid attention to the temp folder, and I can see that Deadline is creating the temp folder and filling the folder with the rendered images correctly.)

Attached are two log files for your perusal after using your .py and .param - these errors are happening on all of our render farm not just specific machine. One is the VerifyAndMoveDirectory error as per above. The other is a new one aerender ERROR -609: AESend failed to send apple event at line 769 I’m not sure what to make of this one.

For the time being I have reverted back to the previous aftereffects.py by Grant on a previous post and went back to the original .param
We are sticking with AE 2015.3 (13.7.2) for now

Ever since disabling the “Fail without finished message” option in the AE config so far I haven’t come across errors for ExitWithSuccessException and Found no “Finished Composition” notice. Cheers!

Hey Roy,
Sorry, I accidently merged over a single line of code which is causing the PostRenderTasks function to execute early, which means the VerifyAndMoveDirectory is fired incorrectly twice. The first time it works just fine and then the 2nd time, it fails, as the locally rendered output has already been copied back to the network filer. D’Oh. See attached fixed plugin for that error.

The other error, is due to some prototype code which sometimes helps to shutdown hung aerender process. This seems to be causing you troubles, so I’ve removed it for you from the plugin as well. That should fix that error as well.

I’ve included the previously updated param file as well in the zip file, although my changes this time around are only in the py file. Still, for testing, I would copy both over and give it another whirl. Maybe 2nd time lucky?

Hopefully, we are getting closer now? Let us know!

Cheers,
Mike

AE-plugin-patch-23-01-2017.zip (8.55 KB)

Hi Mike,
I can confirm that the latest code is working without issues for local rendering.
Please don’t forget to push this code into the latest release  so that when I update the repo later it won’t revert back to the previous behaviour.
Thanks!

Cool. Already done sir. Checkout the next SP when it is released.

Hey guys,

I hope you are all fine.

Unfortunately I need to pick up on the issue we had with the videocopilot ae plugins (Saber) at the beginning of the year. We just started working with an old project file where we used Saber. Since we solved the issue in the past I was a bit surprised that it occured again.

We are using Deadline 9.0.6.1 in combination with After Effects 2015.3 (13.8.1) and all my slaves get stuck at the end of the render process. The render actually is finished but nothing happens at the end.

I doug out the old AfterEffects.py file which Grant provided last time and to my surprise it did the trick again.

Since then Deadline had a few updates and I compared the new .py file with the old one to see if I can figure out what might cause this behaviour. Unfortunately, my python skills are not the best and I couldn’t really figure out if it’s just a minor line which I need to change in order to keep the new python file and all

Or different, could something cause major problems if I just keep the old AfterEffects.py instead of using the new one from 9.0.6.1?

Any advise would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
