C4D - Use Batch Plugin fails loading vray

Hi guys,

We’re using C4D 18 with Vray3.4 and if submit a render from C4D and turn on Use Batch Plugin then the render will fail not loading the vray plugin. If we turn it off everything renders fine.

Hey Andrew,

I just tested this out and it seems to be throwing a large number of errors but is otherwise getting me output. Is this what you are seeing or is it actually failing the tasks for you. Also do you have any logs so that I could see what exactly is going on.

Hey Grant,

Yea, here’s the two logs, 1st with batch on, 2nd with batch off… It doesn’t write an image when Batch Plugin is turned on. Ignore the RLM errors… for some reason it throws those because it finds another RLM server first before it actually gets it’s own license, but it works.

The main error lines are:

Hey Andrew,

Sorry about the slow reply. So looking at your c4dBatch job it appears that there is nothing in the log that has to do with the vray other then the missing plugin call at the end. Also when comparing the seem to have been run on different machines. Would you be able to try running the batch job on a machine that succeeded in the non batch mode and/or try manually opening the scene on that machine to see if it has vray installed.

Hi Grant,

I can rerun the test on the same node, but it’s 100% reproducible on all nodes. Basically when we launch using batch it will not load the vray plugin, and when we don’t use batch mode it will. Now one thing to note is that we set an environment variable to determine where the C4D plugins are loaded from on the network… That var in windows is: C4D_PLUGINS_DIR

I’m guessing that somehow batch mode is not loading/reading the system environment vars and causing the plugin to not be loaded.

Just a thought… I"ll provide the two logs from the same machine as soon as I get a chance to run another test.

This sounds very very familiar. We rely on C4D_PLUGINS_DIR to load our C4D batch plugin. When you set your env var stuff, can you make sure you ‘append’ instead of ‘overwriting’, then our stuff won’t break? IIRC, we couldn’t figure out another way to get around this essential bootstrap point of entry we need.

just wanted to piggy back on this BUG, I believe this is C4D_PLUGINS_DIR related. entirely. Im having the same failures with cycles4d. if I change the PATH back to default C4D_PLUGINS_DIR the error is gone. Not ideal, because I’ve set the plugins dir to be in a place that makes updating the plugins easy for every machine at once.

Im using Rapidee to modify my environment, is there a way within it to make it play nice with deadline?

That’ll depend on your operating system, but since you mentioned “batch file”, I’ll assume Windows here.

I’m not overly familiar with that particular variable, but you can change them following this guide:

You could also create a batch file and point Deadline to it by modifying the paths Deadline will search through for C4D:
