3ds Max 2013 - renders not saving

Hi,

I’m having an interesting issue with Max 2013 and Deadline 6. My renders are not being saved.

Everything is setup correctly, when I render the scene file locally it saves the render file where it’s supposed to. But throught Deadline, no errors, no warnings, but also no render files are being saved.

Is there anything I have to setup additionally? I’m submitting the file via Monitor, 3ds Max 2013 x64 (Windows Server 2012), I don’t submit the scene file with the job, all stays on the network. All UNC paths are correct and working.

Any thoughts?

Can you post a log from the job? The log should say where the output is being saved to.

What does it mean? I didn’t specify anything special in Deadline, the render filename is set in the Max scene and it should be: \render\publicsmb\BunnyTest\Bunny_Corona_tst_.jpg

Thanks for the log. Is it possible that the Save File option is enabled, but the output path is empty? The 2nd last line in the log indicates that there was no output path specified. Normally, this would be a complete path to the image file:

If that’s not the case, can you send us a very simple test scene that reproduces the problem? We’ll try submitting it from the Monitor here to see if we can figure out the problem.

I’m not running any scripts with the scene/job/tasks so I’m not really sure why the output path should be empty. It shouldn’t as I said the file is setup correctly and saves out the files just fine when run from 3dsmaxcmd or directly from Max gui.

I’ve also included a plugin needed to render the scene. All you need to do is to place the *.dll files in your PATH (or directly in the 3ds Max root installation) and all the plugin files where Max can load them.

The only thing I changed was the output path to a UNC path that exists here.

This is really strange… what happens if you submit from within 3dsmax?

I’ll have to test submitting from within Max, but we’re going to be using our own submitter, so this isn’t an option. Though I’ll test it for the sake of testing :slight_smile:

Maybe in 3dsMax try deleting the renderoutput filepath/filename via MXS:

rendOutputFilename = “”

then close render scene dialog, save Max file, close and re-open Max and the file and re-create the render output file path/name and then submit…

I wonder if you have a foreign language character / unicode symbol somewhere in the file path/name? (Deleting it above will eliminate this being the issue).

Hey Mike, thanks. I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work.

What I suspect is that there is a mis-match of “something” between the render slave (Windows Server 2012 x64) and the Deadline Repository Server (some Linux distro I’m not familiar with, will specify further). Because I tried Debug rendering the scene file on the slave machine and it works just fine. No errors. As well as cmd rendering or GUI rendering, all just works without any issues, but as soon as I submit the job via Deadline Monitor, I’m getting this strange behavior.

I haven’t setup any path remapping in the repository and I’m not running any scripts that’d be interferring with the Max scene file or the jobs themselves.

So it’s either some kind of a weird internal bug, or some higher dark voodoo magic :slight_smile:

Did you end up trying this? Just curious if it made a difference or not.

Is Windows Server 2012 x64 officially supported for Max2013 and Deadline v5.2?

Is Windows 8 supported? And we’re using the latest Deadline 6 beta. And it works when submitted via the SMTD Maxscript. So, there must be something off with the Monitor Submission.

Can you do the following:

  1. Find the job you submitted from within Max (that worked), bring up the Job Details panel, and expand the 3dsmax Properties section. Then select all the properties underneath and copy & paste into your response.

  2. Do the exact same thing for a job submitted from the Monitor (that didn’t work).

We can compare them to see if anything stands out. There should be a lot less options for the Monitor job, but maybe it’s setting a bad default for something that’s screwing things up.

There is something seriously wrong with our monitor submissions.

And not only monitor submissions, even if we do generate our own job_info and plugin_info files and submit those via deadlinecommand, the behavior is the same (bad).

Well… this is interesting. I disabled the LOCAL rendering and I was able to capture this error message popping up:

Slave the file, and try again with local rendering. I would expect you would get the same error, except that it will have the path above, because I’m guessing that max is just falling back to this path in this case.

“I have so seen this issue before”…but I just can’t quite remember what caused it…

  1. Do you have any scripts/path re-mapping going on in the background that might be ripping out the file path?
  2. Perhaps on the slave rendering the Max file in question, its local configuration (user profile specific or not? Check “InstallSettings.ini” in root of 3dsMax install) has a different Max “Set Project Directory” than the submitting machine? Perhaps its pointing at a non-existing file path or a path which contains an illegal character? When this is encountered, it defaults to Ryan’s “Set Project Directory” path?
