I can load up the submission script in AE 2015 fine on first try, if I cancel out of the panel or submit a job and close the panel. If I launch the script once more AE will crash. It is consistent across 2 machines and has been installed via copying the file onto local machine via documentation.
Is there any chance that there is an updated submission script for 2015 with this fixed?
Otherwise, what would be the best way to get this worked out?
Currently the version that supports AE CC 2015 is Deadline 7.2, which is currently in beta. If you are on the beta, I would suggest posting this issue to the beta forums. If you are not, and want to get on the beta to try out our 2015 support, please email beta@thinkboxsoftware.com
Ok fair enough, not sure we will be able to jump on the beta in the middle of production.
So just to be clear, if I wanted to integrate any new software into an already released deadline version then I will need to customize the submission script myself?
Yes, you would need to change the submission and plugin files to reflect the new version, though this is not something we support and it can have bad consequences if things have changed.
Just to let you know, we have had reports from numerous customers who have hacked their own support for AE CC 2015 in pre 7.2 versions who have had issues with AE crashing when trying to submit, so my best advice would be to try the beta or hold off until 7.2, but if neither is an option I would strongly recommend the save often approach in case of crashes.
Ok cool, I remember back in the day you would release updated submission scripts for ‘new/updated’ programs on the current version of deadline.
How do you choose what ‘new/updated’ plugins you will support and offer new submission scripts for?
Or was this an anomaly and going forward is this something that you will not do? Just trying to understand the current thinking…
I know shortly after I started here we released something like that for 5.2, but I don’t think we’ve done so since. Our general stance is that if the software releases after the release of a Deadline version, that is usually made available in the next version of Deadline. Normally this is not an issue as some people are willing to poke at the code themselves, but there are some instances, for example Houdini 14, and AE CC 2015, where hacking your own support is problematic.
As for adding support going forward for new and updated applications, the general rule of thumb is if the updated software is released, or at least in a release candidate phase early enough for us to implement support before a new Deadline version is release, we will do all we can. Regarding new additions to our supported software list, it depends on demand as well as the feasibility of adding support as applications don’t always have the level of support we might like for network command line rendering.
Just info for anyone coming into this forum thread later. The bug with AE crashing on the second submit is some sort of weird problem with their API and the window we were creating.
The fix for us here was to use a different window type (something other than a dialog window if I remember properly). We fixed it pretty quickly, so if you hit the problem, make sure you’ve upgraded to Deadline 7.2 when it’s released (and make sure to keep up with the betas).
