After Effects rendering on OSX slave without display?

I’m attempting to use a Mac Pro as an AE CS5 slave with no monitor attached – using Apple Remote Desktop to log into the box and launch the Slave.

It seems to spin up aerendercore, but does not actually start rendering – just sits quietly or throws an Error -609. If I attach a monitor and re-submit, it renders.

Some googling suggests this might be a problem w/ aerender & windowserver. Is it known to ThinkBox / Deadline community? Is there a workaround short of attaching a display to every Mac?

I’ve been through this, that dreaded error -609… I think it’s because OpenGL doesn’t work without a monitor attached.

You can get Gefen DVI Detectives to trick the mac into thinking there are monitors attached. Then, everything should render just fine.

Ah – good idea, thanks!

Glad to know it’s not me… do you know if it’s AE only, or will other apps also fail (Maya, C4D, etc.)?

Strangely, some older 2008 Mac Pros don’t seem to care whether there’s a display attached or not. But the 2010s definitely do.
