Alembic 1.0 was released.

XMesh should contain this format!!
Contain? Not sure that would make any sense at all. The scope of Alembic is much larger than that of XMesh, and the format relies on implementation from the applications themselves.
We are evaluating alembic. Now it is properly released, I can see us including support for it in some form. We aren’t entirely sure yet on what form that will take. It could be a replacement of the current xmesh format, or be added as an additional format. Since alembic is meant to be ‘bigger’ than xmesh, it’s likley not suitable to be a drop in replacement.

Depending on how long it takes for ADSK to add Alembic support to 3ds max, you might have a window where reading/writing Alembic files is something that can be considered a sideline feature of XMesh. I don’t know how big that window would be though and if it would allow you to make money off it.
