Forgive me as I am a newbie, but is it possible to automate the startup and shutdown of AWS spotfleet instances based on a certain criteria through deadline. For instance job 1 is allowed 40 instances and they startup when a job is submitted to deadline and then the instance can be shutdown after being idle for 15 mins, or whatever specified time frame?

Have you read about the Spot Event Plugin? This does exactly as you described.
Not sure if you’re using AWS Portal or Balancer, but I figure it’s good to note anyway. The docs mention the Spot is a separate application from AWS Portal and Balancer. They can be run at the same time but are not meant to compliment each.
