Best way to matte PRT with another PRT

Hey,

I’ve got two prt loaders that we’re trying to render. Is there anyway to apply some kind of matte shader to render 1 particle sytem with other matted out? So far the only info can find is to mesh the particle system first with Blobmesh or frost and then use the geo as matte. Please advise

If xmesh is the way to go. What settings/amount of particles do I need to get good matte geo? If I have 20 partitions, How many partitions should I use to mesh the matte geo?

Using Geometry is the current workaround, but it is quite tricky. I have never used it in production and cannot tell you what exactly to use as settings.

The alternative might be to render a “mask” pass where the one system is colored in red and the other in green or blue, and use the result in comp to only reveal the particles masked by the red color and skip the rest.
Not sure if this would work correctly in volumetric context, but it might be worth a try.

Yes I’m currently using that method. Expect with black and white ( in the emission channel with lights turned off ). Just checking to see if there is a better way!

That technique does work well. We’ve used it on many shots. You get very nice partial occlusion in low density areas.

I concur!
