Bug: Region rendering (3dsmax)

Just found a bug in deadline 4 with region rendering, with 3dsmax 9, not sure if it affects other versions as the region rendering system changed in future versions…

When you specify a region render in 3dsmax in the viewport, it is possible for your ‘region box’ to go outside of your Safe frame… normally 3dsmax adjust the region values, but it’s possible to send a render off before MAX trims it’s values…

See image attached… In this Case the image would render wider than it is supposed to.

In 3dsmax 2012, I’m unable to select a region outside of the safe frame. Deadline’s region gizmo also doesn’t let you select a region outside of the safe frame. So it looks like this has either been fixed in later versions of Deadline or 3dsmax (or both).

It’s been fixed in later versions of max but remember some of us still use 3dsmax 9

Hopefully updating to Deadline 5 soon… will let you know if it’s still present.

Actually more seriously… when this error has occured the frame returns black… even when it’s rendered for the expected duration… and i’ve witnessed the VFB rendering.

We try to support as many versions back as possible, and if there is something we can do about it (without affecting later versions), we will try to fix it. However, if the issue is due to a limitation/bug in an older version (especially one that is 6 versions old), that could be a different story.

I know SMTD allows you to use the Max region selector instead of our custom region gizmo. I’m pretty sure our custom gizmo respects the safe frame in v5, so you would have to use that.

So in short, if you upgrade to v5 and you still have this problem, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

Cheers,

I’m writing a Sanity Checker private function to detect if the values are outside of the range. Will post it here when I’m done, it’s just bizarre that the frames come out black…
