caching out frost geo

Hi,

once i’ve meshed out frost geo from a particle sustem, whats the best way to cache out the geo? pointcache modifier?

SuperMesher or the um err the super secret highly advanced ultra tuned thinkbox solution. oops I may have said too much  hmmm maybe that was a dream…was I dreaming?

SuperMesher can be finicky though with a large mesh, just double check your cache before you commit it.

Uhhh. Does this have something to do with a siggraph annoucement? I’ve heard there was gonan be some goodies announced.

For the meantime should I pick up super mesher? or wait?

Depends on when you need your solution, how big your meshes are, whether you want correct motion blur from cached Frost meshes, whether you want more than one UVW channel cached, whether you want to use it cross-platform with the likes of Maya and Softimage and whether you are willing to pay a premium for the additional features.

In short, SuperMesher is cheap, fast with reasonably sized meshes (say, 100K faces), supports only Mapping Channel 1 and calculates velocities based on two consecutive records on the fly, so it would fail to do so from a Frost mesh. But it is available now, for Max only (but can read and convert OBJ sequences from other apps though).

The X-Mesher which was indirectly announced in this press release
onlysoftwareblog.com/2011/08/thi … raph-2011/
supports all relevant Max channels including all 100 mapping channels, generates the Velocity channel at saving time so it is compatible with at least one of Frost’s velocity modes, and has the ability to save particle velocities from TP (and in the future PFlow) even if the particle mesh topology is changing. It will provide native savers and loaders for Maya and Softimage (loaders would be free, savers would require a separate license) in addition to OBJ sequence support. It stores channel data in compressed streams and only caches changing channels (for example if a channel like the face list is not changing over time, it is not being saved on each frame). It is still in Alpha (but has been used in production for 5+ years), can handle multi-million face meshes efficiently and will be several times more expensive than SuperMesher.

If you are a current Frost user, I would suggest applying for the X-Mesh beta program to see if it solves your problems. SuperMesher also has a free evaluation version (with some limitations), so you can compare and see which works for you.

alright so when is X-mesh coming out?

We are about to start a Beta program. There are things we want to add/improve and make sure it works for everybody. When that happens, we will release it (sometime in fall I assume). But there is no set release data yet, so joining the Beta is a good idea.

sounds fantastic. I love checking our Blurs work, they’ve come a long way and have been making top notch stuff, its great to
see you guys working together. I always enjoy checking out Brando Rizas page for his making of stuff, he is pretty great at blowing shit
up

as always! exciting times! I can’t believe it took me this long to get into pflow / particles – it’s been my favorite thing to work on
and I always try to find a way to bring it to our projects in the studio
