Crash when trying to map color chanel in File update op

Hello

I was trying to follow Boris’ tutorial featured on studiodaily (desintegration of geometry) and ended up spending a few hours debugging a crash issue with no success:
Basically, everytime I try to swich the color chanel into the file update operator, I get the following error message with a window that sticks and obliges me to ctrl-alt-del… (this is done at step 8 in the tutorial for reference). I had try to redo the initial save of the first emitter with color embedded (overwrite particle color switched off) but it gave the same result.

I’m on last krakatoa release, with max 2008 64 bits. Error screen capture attached.

Could you please advise ?

tks

You are the first one to report this on 64 bit. We have been unable to reproduce this on any of our office machines.
I was able to reproduce it on my 32 bit old desktop which unfortunately died last week and I don’t know if it will ever run again.
At this point, we have no solution since a review of the code showed no obvious bugs. It seems that the problem is reported by PFlow.
Do you have Box #1 and/or Box #3 installed?

Sorry for the delayed reply, I somehow missed this post.

Hi Olivier,

As Bobo mentioned, we’ve been unable to reproduce this problem on any of our systems. I’m wondering if there is a version discrepancy between your version of ParticleFlow and ours. Unfortunately, I don’t think Particle Flow has a version number you can get at from within Max. Would it be possible for you to post the version numbers on your Particle Flow dlls?

You can get the version numbers by right-clicking the dll file in Windows Explorer and choosing ‘Properties’ from the right-click menu. Then go to the version tab and note the File Version number.

There are several Particle Flow related dlls that I can see in my 3ds Max 2008 folder. There are some in the root folder, some in subfolders. Here’s a list of them:

ParticleFlow.dll
ParticleFlowTools.dll
ParticleActions.dlo
ParticleActions2.dlo
ParticleChannels.dlo
ParticleEngine.dlo

There also some Box#1/Box#3 related dlls

ParticleFlowToolsBox1.dlo
ParticleFlowToolsBox3.dlo
ParticleFlowSubOperators.dlo
ParticleFlowToolsFreebies.dlo

If you can locate any of these and note the version numbers, that would be much appreciated.

Hi guys,

Sorry for not getting back earlier. Having not received any feedback one month after posting, I gave up this forum…
I’m now back, starting a 2 months project which will involve a lot of krakatoa I think…

So, could you just let me know what I should do to get around this bug, since I’m on max2008 64bits and haven’t got any of the pflow box extensions.

Tks
Olivier

We have confirmed that the Max 2009 Creativity Extension which includes PFlow Box #1 fixes the color channel bug. Frantic Films is running a special build of PFlow for Max 2008 that Orbaz provided us with when the bug was first discovered. This explains why I was not getting the error when I was developing the tutorial.

I still want to apologize for the problem some users experienced with this tutorial even though the bug wasn’t in our code or my setup!

Thank you all for your interest in Krakatoa - I can promise you A LOT of fascinating new features and workflows with the fast approach of Siggraph 2009 and Krakatoa 1.5!

Those who want to show us their work with Krakatoa can simply post a HQ video on YouTube and send us the link or post it here!

Hi Olivier,

It turned out that the error was in PFlow itself, not in Krakatoa.
Oleg has fixed the bug in Max 2009 Creativity Extension (which added Box #1 to Max 2009) and he had provided us with a fix for 2008 which explains why we never saw that bug inhouse.
I assume the fix is also in Max 2010. I cannot tell whether the fix is available as part of any Boxes or not, this would be a question for Orbaz.

In short, your only options are switching to Max 2009 with Extension or 2010, or asking Orbaz for a 2008 fix if that is possible.
