Hi
If you create a PRT loader in a hidden layer , And then assign a file to it and try to hit the Update info button on the Particle count Rollout, it gives an error :
Particle_file_istream_factory: the input file “frame number” Does not exist.
Once we unhide the layer the problem is solved

Cannot reproduce.
Please provide exact steps.
Here are mine:
*Started new Max scene
*Created a new layer and set it to hidden.
*Created a PRT Loader and picked a file sequence
*Expanded the Counts rollout and pressed “Update Info”
RESULT: No error, counts correctly updated.
There must be something about your setup that is different.
If I move the time slider before the first frame in the sequence, I get
particle_file_istream_factory: The input file “C:\Temp\partitions\tutorial\particles_-006.prt” does not exist.
But I cannot reproduce your error message.
