Thanks Mike, installing now and will test this morning. Hope its fixed it. I am still confused as to why Mental Ray issues will effect Vray scenes, but I no nuffin!

Sadly its not fixed, I don’t think.
I sent a test scene with a load of geom that was using all our plugin, and all machines failed, then resent with ignore missing Dlls and rendered. Then I sent a live project image, and got the below.
Two machines are still windows 7 and didn’t error, only windows 10 machines.
I resent the same jobs with ignore missing .Dlls and they worked on most machines but not all.
Sorry to be the barer of bad news. To confirm, all scenes are Vray, and all machines have access to a shared Dir with plugins in, and are rendering fine through 3ds max 2014 and Deadline 7.

Our recent release fixed a DLL load order issue which meant that apps, in particular ones that use Qt dll’s would not work. In the case of Mental Ray in 3dsMax, the job would always be successful and ‘render’ to completion, but the actual renders would be ‘black’ / empty. We strongly believe we have fixed this particaulr issue from all our internal testing over the last 48 hours.
In your provided log, 3dsMax is actually failing to even load your max scene file. This is a different error. As it partly works when you ignore missing DLL’s, I would say, it’s highly likely that something there is the root cause here. All these errors should try to be fixed:
I believe we have spoken about this plugin issue before? (remove empty state sets and reset SS for scene for 3dsMax 2014)
Missing dll: Built-in - AnchorHelperObjectLooks like MIghty Tiles Pro & Rail Clone plugins are both not working correctly, which can typically cause a file to not load correctly.
Unable to load file: MightyTilesPro3dsMR.dllcannot load ./RCShader.dllLooking at the Mighty Tiles install instructions for Mental Ray, it really scares me that it tells you to move dll’s around within 3dsMax:

Do these plugins need a license for network rendering? If so, is it configured correctly?
Finally, you did restart the slave application on each of your render nodes or reboot them after the 8.0.3.0 was installed?

My main confusion is that it was all working through Deadline 7, suggesting the plugins etc are all ok. But even D7 is now getting errors. Its a mine field as I cant get any consistency on the farm at the moment.
The scenes dont have any SS, we have never used them.
Well I’ve found a xref that was messed up somehow, and how I’ve removed it, the jobs go through, so no sure why the RC and FP errors came up or the MT as it was a plain model. Any way, D7 is now ok, touch wood. I’ll try sending some jobs to D8 now without the model issue.

You say downgraded in your previous reply? From what to what? The logs are saying that 3dsMax is failing to start up on this machine. Has the machine had a reboot recently? Was Max 2016 recently installed and all the c++ redistributables installed with it? Is it possible to check if 3dsMax starts up OK on this machine in GUI mode? I suspect it will fail and reveal the true issue here.

Ah, apologies for not being clearer. I have downgraded backburner to 2016, 1727.u to be exact.
Yes the machine has been recently rebooted, 3DsMax wasn’t recently installed and I can only assume about the c++ redistributables. Max definitely starts OK, this is a laptop and I am on holiday and messing around with things.
I have been installing and upgrading things that I thought might be wrong and it is backburner that seems to have fixed it.

Righto, looks like the problem persists. I am not sure why but it seems intermittent and downgrading backburner hasn’t fixed it but I cannot be sure what causes it. (Rebooting got it working again).

Ah, gotcha. So, both of the logs you provided previously were using Backburner 2017. I assume you downgraded afterwards and BB is now correctly displaying 2016. Here are a few things to double-check that might help if you recently updated to Deadline 8?:

This line is always useful as well:
“It is recommended to always start 3dsMax for the very first time with Administrative rights to ensure the application is fully initialized correctly. This can be achieved by right-clicking the 3dsmax.exe application and selecting “Run as administrator”.”
Are the logs still providing the same error as before? Sometimes just uninstalling all versions of Backburner, purging any BB directories and installing from fresh can help as well.
