D8 and 3dsmax 2017

Hi,

I’ve installed the latest D8 and its working fine, can submit through 3ds max 2014, but I have then tried in 2017 and the coloured bar bottom left hangs at 50% and yellow. The sanity check is clear, or un ticked. I’m submitting the same scene.

As 2014 is working, I no its not a permissions thing, and that D8 is working.

Any ideas, or logs I can provide?

Typically, its working on 4 other machines, just mine! Tried removing the three scripts and restarting, then putting them back in place and still hangs at 50%.

Still trying to fix, removed D8 client from machine, removed all scripts from machine by searching, and reinstalled D8 client, and added back the scripts, still the same issue. My machine is unique, the others are ok, but I need to fix it!

Please help!

Slightly more annoying, the machines that were working are now not working! Just a simple scene with a box!

And another error, select the intergration tab and script errors come up.

Looking further, the error to do with access violation might be the issue. We’ve just gone to windows 10 could it be a issue with UAC or something, or another permissions setting somewhere.

Again, 3ds max 2014 and deadline 8 play together on windows 10, just not 2017.

Of course, the error is a memory access violation, and while MAXScript in 2017 claims it is a “Known System Exception”, it is still unknown why it would occur.

I cannot test this myself right now because I don’t have VRay installed in my Max 2017. But if it is random on different machines, it might be a moot point. Submitting a Krakatoa job for example had no issues here.

Also, can you try unchecking the option “Chaos Group V-Ray” under the “Options” tab, “Export Renderer-Specific Advanced Settings” rollout of the SMTD UI? That should skip the properties gathering - it would be interesting to see if it affects the outcome of the submission…

This is a known bug in 2017 with VRay which I I informed Vlado last week about on the VRay beta forum. It is actually an Autodesk bug and I have sent ADSK a bug report. In the meantime, Vlado reckons earlier this afternoon, he has worked out a way to also handle this on his side. Grab the latest VRay nightly as of tomorrow to fix OR do as Bobo says and disable renderer advanced props for now.

Never touch a new version of 3dsMax until at least the first SP is released. :wink:

Hi guys, thanks so much for the info and looking into this. Bloody Autodesk! We’re not using 2017 in production, but I wanted to get the farm etc installed and ready! Been using the nightlies for Vray but from 3 days ago. I’ll get the latest version now and see if its fixed. I might get on the beta program for Vray as well so I can see these these, and not waste your time!

  1. Mental Ray / iRay is now an optional install option when installing 3dsMax 2017 on your rendernodes. It’s ON by default, but just checking that is the case when you installed?

  2. IIRC, State Sets created with an older version of 3dsMax are not fully compatible with Max 2017 (Autodesk limitation). Does it work if you delete ALL State Set info prior to submission?

Ok, not rendering with Mentral ray or Iray, only Vray, but I think they are installed anyway - checked on the test slave, and both iray and mentral ray rendered locally, as well as vray of course so all installed

Not used scene state so shouldn’t be in the file, but it has come from 2014. I’ve cleared everything that can be deleted anyway.

Same issue

I’ve just gone back to 3dsmax 2014 and loaded the original scene and re-submitted into D8 and get the below errors. This scene rendered on D7 a couple days ago fine.

Think I’ll need to swop back to D7 for the time being.

okay, your hitting the same issue we are seeing elsewhere this week. D8 + Windows 10 + 3dsMax + Mental Ray and something isn’t right. Only this combo is affected. ie: WIndows 7 users or Deadline 7 are just fine. We have a plan to get to the bottom of it, but it’s gonna be super painful and will take a day or so. BTW, VRay & Corona is fine. It seems to be Mental Ray only that is getting upset.

It would be incredibly helpful if you could post (upload to this thread) a full 3dsMax 2017 and a 2014 job log report, when they both error. I’m interested in all the Mental Ray shaders failing to load…I will have a little play as I can reproduce this issue; we just don’t know what mysterious thing is causing it yet.

After considerable effort, we have now narrowed down to the offending line of code in our core. Another developer is currently working out how to resolve this issue as this code was added to fix another problem but has accidentally added this regression in. We were all really surprised that none of our beta testers actually reported this before we shipped. :unamused:

Yes it is strange as its a fundamental issue. Maybe people have held off windows 10, as did we till the last week!

I believe attempts were made last week to see if we could provide a quick hack fix with instructions for the current build but that was unsuccessful, so it will need to be fixed in the core with a new build. I’m hoping we will be able to fix this quickly for customers. I’ll check in with the lead developer later today for you.
