Deadline 10.0.0.27 (Beta 5)

AWS Confidential Beta Material

Thank you for participating in the Deadline 10 beta program!

Deadline 10 increases flexibility for hybrid workflows that leverage Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2, allowing you the freedom to easily access any combination of on-premise or cloud-based resources! The new AWS Portal panel in the Deadline Monitor enables simple and secure expansion of your on-premise render farm, and natively integrates with AWS via your existing AWS accounts. It also synchronizes with your on-premise asset server automatically to ensure all appropriate files have been transferred to AWS before rendering begins.

Deadline 10.0.0.27 is the fifth beta release for Deadline 10, and the release notes can be found in the next post below.

Setup and Installation

Please visit this link to access the setup documentation and installers:

Download the “AWS Portal Docs.zip” package and unzip it. It contains the setup documentation, as well as a basic policy file that will be used during the setup process to set the permissions required by the new AWS Portal panel to launch infrastructure and render nodes in AWS. During the setup process, you will be required to install the Deadline 10 Repository and Client, as well as the Cloud Link component. So download the installers for the appropriate operating system(s) from the link above.

Launching AWS Render Nodes

After the setup process is complete, and you have used the AWS Portal to successfully launch your AWS infrastructure, the next step will be to launch some render nodes. During this step, you will be asked to specify the ID of the AMI (Amazon Machine Image) you wish to use. The list of available AMIs can be found here:

Note that AMI IDs will be updated with each Deadline 10 beta release, so refer to the page above to get the latest IDs.

What’s New in Deadline 10.0.0.27 (Beta 5)

New S3-Based Asset Transfer Service

  • This beta release introduces a new S3-based asset transfer service.
  • New settings have been added to the AWS Portal settings to support this new service.
  • The previous SFTP-based asset transfer service is still supported though.
  • Added support for pre-caching assets for AWS Portal in Maya for Windows.
    AWS Portal Panel Improvements
  • The AWS Portal UI is now disabled by default for users, and requires Super User mode or proper permissions to access it.
  • Added option to specify a friendly display name when creating new Infrastructure. This name can then be used to identify the Infrastructure.
  • Added settings for allowing AWS Portal Pulses to become primary and AWS Portal Slaves to perform house cleaning. Both of these are disabled by default.

Miscellaneous Improvements

  • Added correct Maya IO paths to the Maya plugins so that renders don’t fail due to a misconfigured executable path.
  • Replaced “Proxy Server” references in the user interface with the more generic “Connection Server” name.
  • When changing the Repository connection settings, the dialog will no longer accept a blank Connection Server host name or IP address.
  • Added option to disable performance profiling under Help -> Debugging Tools for each application.
  • Application log streaming will now go through Pulse if Remote Command Redirection is enabled.
  • In Power Management, the delay between machine startups in the Machine Startup feature is now in milliseconds instead of seconds.
