deadline 6.2 limit group doesn't match license server

We have 415 VRay render licenses, so we set up a vray limit of 415. Deadline Monitor lists the stubs in use very different from what the vray license server is reporting. For instance, right now monitor says Maxed Out 415 stubs in use, While the VRL server is reporting 195 Engaged and 220 free. There are a lot of vray jobs in the queue waiting to render. Any Idea what might be causing this? I know the numbers probably won’t match up exactly, but 220 is a huge discrepancy. Any idea why this is happening?

Hello,

Can you check how many renders are ongoing that have this limit group applied to them? Is it possible that while a task in the limit group has picked up, it might be in pre or post task work where the license wouldn’t be pulled? I am not familiar with Vray licensing, so I am not sure when a license is pulled, or released in the process. You could try increasing the limit a bit and see if you run into issues.

I should mention that there were also some issues regarding limits in 6.x that have been handled in 7. Are there any plans for you folks to upgrade in the near future? I can give you a hand if you like.

Thank you for the reply. I think I figured it out. You are correct, The VRay jobs don’t pull a license right away. Some of the jobs take a long time to load and they don’t actually grab a license until the rendering starts. I changed the “return at task progess” limit property to 75% so now it releases the stub so the waiting jobs can use a stub while loading. Hopefully the job that gave up the stub finishes before the next jobs actually try to grab a license. I know it’s a little risky, but if I start to see VRay license errors, I’ll just raise the “return at task progress” percentage to a safer number. Currently, with it set at 75%, stubs in use reported by deadline hover very close (+/- 15) to the Number of licenses engaged reported by the VRay License Server. That’s close enough for me.

We do have plans to upgrade to 7. We missed our window between seasons. We’ve been testing 7 and will probably upgrade after the next pilot season.

Thanks!
