Hi everyone !
I’m posting here because I am having a little problem using DeadLine …
In fact, my RenderFarm is splitted into in two different places and I’d like to control everything from one location. So I installed Hamachi (which is able to “generate a LAN” on the internet) and when I searched in DeadLine Monitor for machines on the network, he was able to find from the first location, the computers from the other. But DeadLine wasn’t installed yet on the computers from the second location.
Then I installed DeadLine on those machines (the second location), specifying the Repository on a computer which is in the first location.
But then, when I try lauching either the Monitor or the Slave, it takes a LOT of time to start up (something like 45 min / 1 h). I think, during this time he’s “Upgrading Repository”, but I don’t know what this means …
Do you have any idea how I could speed up the lauching time on the machines in the second location ? Either using Hamachi or something else … Is there a way to use DeadLine Slaves by the Internet ?
Thanks a lot !
Hi there,
Deadline wasn’t designed for this. Deadline currently relies heavily on Windows File Sharing, which involves the creation, reading, and transfer of files from the repository machine. If this is performed over a slow connection, it will slow down Deadline’s overall performance. We hope to eventually move Deadline to a more standard client-server architecture (which would boost Deadline’s performance in this case), but this is a long term goal with no ETA at the moment.
For the specific problem you posted about, Deadline automatically checks for updates on the repository whenever the client software is launched. This requires Deadline to check each binary on the repository before launching the application. In Deadline 3.0, this feature can be disabled, although once your application is actually running, you will still likely notice the performance hit.
Cheers,
- Ryan
