Ding Dang Dongle! Idea

So I mentioned this a little to Darcy at Siggraph, well what I was doing anyway to circumvent a static license location.

Since I work in three different places, ie at home, on the road, and in an office, licensing is a major PITA for me. So what I did was buy a USB WI-FI and I have since attached most of my licenses to its MAC, this works fantastic since I just grab that and go, a poor mans Dongle I guess. So my worry is when this goes out and I am sure it will, I will have to get all my licenses setup again.

SO this leads me to an idea that I am quite fond of, it would of course take other developers to hop on the ship too of course, but would it be possible to use a actual Flexera USB Dongle ID as the MAC ID instead? So everyone licensing schemes would remain the same but people like myself could have all of their licenses tied to a single dongle ID. So the dongle would instead be linked to a specific person and/or company and not locked to a specific software.

I think something like this would benefit everyone. New license server - just move the dongle and install the license manager, on the road - bring it with you, ect.

Or at the very least offer it as an option?

Any thoughts? I am asking you guys first since you use Flex, you guys know about it, and Flex offers Dongles (at least my Vray is a Flex)

Is this just a stupid idea?

No, but Darcy is in the process of relocating from Winnipeg to Vancouver over the weekend and probably won’t be online until sometime next week.
Since I cannot comment on the merits of the idea as I have no knowledge of our licensing code, I will just remain silent until he answers

I’m pretty sure the dongles provided by Flexera are just wireless usb sticks without the wireless part.Short of snapping your wireless stick in half, you shouldn’t have any issues with it dying. The device doesn’t need to work as a wireless unit, it just needs to report its MAC address (which is unique btw, hence why its used for licensing).

LOL, I should have found one that is a bit smaller then  (all of this didn’t occur to me until after the fact that I had just tried a bunch of licenses to it)

But sure, ok, thanks, I shall keep this in mind if I ever end up snapping it in half :astonished:
