I thought we had fixed this error previously, but it turns out we’re still having an issue. When rendering 3ds Max Design 2010 with Deadline 3.1 SP1 on Server 2008 64-bit, we’re getting the following error:
“An error occurred in StartJob(): 3dsmax startup: Error getting connection from 3dsmax: Monitored managed process “3dsmaxProcess” has exited or been terminated.
2009/08/26 16:44:18 ERR: An unexpected exception has occurred in the network renderer and it is terminating.
(Deadline.Plugins.ScriptPlugin+FailRenderException)”
Rendering 3ds Max through the command line works fine. We also don’t get this error on a similarly configured machine running XP64.
I’ve included the full slave log below.
Thanks for the help.

Hi Eric,
Do you get this error with every Max scene, or is it limited to specific scenes? If it’s specific scenes, maybe you can try trimming things out until you find the cause of the problem. Whatever it is, it’s causing Max to crash. The following is from the Max render log itself:
Are you able to open the same scene on the machine and render locally?
Also, I noticed that Windows Server 2008 isn’t explicitly listed as a supported OS for Max Design 2010. That’s interesting since the problem is only occurring on your Server 2008 machine.

Hi Ryan,
Yes, that scene renders fine locally on the slave, and I get the same error with multiple scenes, even a test scene rendering just a cube. I know Server 2008 isn’t on the supported list for 3ds Max 2010, but Max seems to work fine on its own. It’s just when rendering with Deadline that we get the issue.
Thanks for the help.
Eric
Sorry, one important bit I forgot to mention: the job DOES render when running the Deadline Slave as an application. It’s when running Deadline as a service that the render fails with the previously mentioned errors. Hope that helps.
Eric
We’re going to set up a Server 2008 VM and see if we can reproduce this. Thanks for the heads up that it only occurs in service mode.
Cheers,
Turns out it will take a little time before we can set up the VM, but in the meantime, I tested rendering Max Design 2010 in service mode on a Vista box and it rendered successfully.
Maybe the problem has something to do with the account that the service is running under?
Cheers,
Hey Ryan,
I considered that, and tried two different administrator accounts with the same error. I also tried running the Deadline Slave as an application while logged in as one of those accounts and it rendered successfully. So it doesn’t seem to be related to the account.
Cheers,
Eric
Hey Ryan,
Have you had any luck recreating this issue? We’d love to get it resolved.
Cheers,
Eric
Hey Eric,
Unfortunately Ryan is out of the office for the week. He will be returning next week Tuesday.
If I remember correctly, the VM had been set up or in the process of being set up. In either case, I’m sure Ryan will get back to you as soon as he returns next week.

We still haven’t configured the VM yet to test this, but we’re working on it. We’ll let you know when we have some results.
Cheers,
Hey Eric,
We were able to reproduce the problem on Server 2008. However, when we tried rendering using the 3ds Command plugin (which uses 3dsmaxcmd.exe) when running as a service, we got the exact same error:
So it would appear that 3ds Max in general has difficulties running as a service on Server 2008. As mentioned earlier, Server 2008 isn’t an official supported platform for 3ds Max, so there could very well be some incompatibilities that are resulting in this problem. So I guess the only workaround is to continue rendering in non-service mode on this machine.
Cheers,
Thanks for checking it out for me, Ryan. It’s odd, because everything was working fine in 3ds Max 2009 on Server 2008, and Server 2008 is pretty much identical to Vista. I’m curious what might have changed. When I get a chance, I’ll check it out with Autodesk.
Cheers,
Eric
