I would like to do something like this in frost, but once I get the particles rendered how do I get the background color to affect the subject?
You render the Frost with the background wrapping around it like a cylinder, sphere, or a box. Meaning: The geometry surrounding the Frost object is mapped with the image that you see in the background. To me, this looks like the surface of the Frost is more reflective, and less refractive. So kick up the reflectivity on the shader.
